The past couple of days have been filled with bombastic news for the DCU. We got to know that Henry Cavill’s return as the Man of Steel is still in flux. To make matters worse, trade outlets reported that Black Adam was set to lose WBD more than a $100 million. But leading man, Dwayne Johnson tweeted out that the report was false. And that Black Adam was set to make a profit in the $50 to $70 million range. And the star also stated that the overall collections of the movie was higher than MCU’s first Captain America movie. Check out his tweet below:
Waited to confirm with financiers before I shared this excellent #BlackAdam news – our film will PROFIT between $52M-$72M.
Fact.
At almost $400M worldwide we are building our new franchise step by step (first Captain America did $370M) for the DC future.https://t.co/GBIgsbtnkq— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) December 7, 2022
But this tweet didn’t sit well with MCU fans. And redditors came out with takes so hot and electrifying that it would burn even Black Adam. So here are the ten best of them:
1) Captain America Numbers Beatdown
Redditor matty_nice said that, “Captain America The First Avenger. Budget of 140M. Less popular lead actor. WW Box office of 370M, adjusted for inflation would be 490M. Black Adam. Budget of 200M. Popular actor. WW Box office at 384M.”
2) Captain America Numbers Beatdown Part 2
Poster Afwife1992 said, “It’s also worth noting that CA turned a decent profit. BA has. $200 million budget. Usually it’s a 2.5x multiplier. That means BA needs $500 million to be profitable. CA was $140 so he needed $350 million. He got to $370 plus added another $152 million in dvd, etc. Plus all the toys.”
3) The Budget Analysis Of Captain America And Black Adam
Redditor atheistic_channel69 said that, “To be fair if we adjust the budget of (Captain America) first avenger we will get 185M which is still less than Black Adam but its way closer.”
4) Chris Evans Has More Range Than Black Adam
Redditor T-408 posted, “It’s also funny that he’s acting like Black Adam is building a new universe. I’m sorry Dwayne, I’m a lifelong fan of yours, but you do not posses the acting range of Chris Evans. Don’t compare where you don’t compete.”
5) Just Ouch Here
Redditor Majestic-Marcus commented, “Doesn’t have the acting range of Chris Evans…Doesn’t have the character name recognition or popularity of Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, or even Cyborg…Doesn’t have the willingness to actually be a villain…This post is just an example of a damaged ego working overtime to try and defend itself! Fans don’t care how much your movie makes, only DC/WB care. And they can actually do the maths!”
6) Black Adam From A Decade Back
Poster Jeigh_Tee said, “No, no, he’s got a point. Black Adam felt like a film from 10 years ago.”
7) This Has Got To Hurt Dwayne Johnson
Redditor aalvarado27 snarkily said, “I can just imagine Dwayne Johnson going through all the MCU movies to find the one that made LESS than his movie did. It might’ve taken him a while.”
8) Unaccounted Growth In Genre
Redditor HummingLemon492 commented, “There’s also the overall growth in the superhero genre due to the MCU that Dwayne’s post fails to acknowledge.”
9) Black Adam Flop Confirmation
Another poster Dave_Eddie said, “If you have to get a bunch of guys into a room to explain how your film has made money, then it’s probably not made as much as you’d hope.”
10) This Is Sadly True
Poster directrix688 said, “It’s like he’s trying to will a franchise into existence.”
While there were reports that Black Adam 2 was in the works, but the latest The Hollywood Reporter article denied such news. As of now, The Rock’s future in the DCU is unclear.
