Marvel lore is full of mentions of elements and metals that are very powerful. Superheroes (and sometimes villains) wield various weapons made out of these very metals. These metals are rich in their history and have very much evolved with time within these comic panels.

Let’s look into some of these super powerful metals existing within the Marvel universe.

1. Adamantium

This metal does not need any introduction. It is what makes the skeleton of James Howlett aka Wolverine. He got these due to the sinister experiments of William Stryker on him. Wolverine’s signature weapon – three long claws protruding from either hand, is made of Adamantium. In the comics, it is a very rare substance and is very expensive to create or manipulate. Its forging process and details of raw materials involved in it are top secret in the U.S. government.

It is not an element per see, because its properties do not qualify it for any known space on the Periodic Table. Adamantium is an extremely rigid steel-based alloy with a virtually indestructible density. Adamantium, or True Adamantium in some cases, is made of ‘super secret’ resins mixed and hardened at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

In sufficient amounts, it can even survive multiple nuclear explosions. Its molecular integrity makes it capable of drilling with greater effectiveness than Vibranium.

2. Vibranium

Said to have been deposited on Earth by a meteorite 1,000,000 years ago, Vibranium is a rare metallic ore with energy-manipulating properties.

In the comics, it is shown that Vibranium was once mined on several planets. However, with time all of those mines were exhausted. As a result, aside from the planets Earth and Torfa, there are no known stores of Vibranium left in the Milky Way Galaxy. Two of its best-known isotopes are – Wakandan Vibranium (Vibranium A) and Antarctic Vibranium (Vibranium B).

Wakandans have always believed Vibranium to be a ‘gift from Gods’ and all of their advanced technology comes from Vibranium only. Even the Wakandan King T’Challa has its suit of Black Panther made out of nanoparticles of Vibranium. Major Wakandan occupation is the mining of this Vibranium ore. It is capable of absorbing and releasing a large amount of kinetic energy.

3. Uru

Uru is a metal from the First Moon that ever existed. This makes it a metal old enough to exist since the beginning of the universe. In appearance, it is similar to stone but is capable of storing strong magical energies. Thor’s Mjolnir and Stormbreaker are made out of this element.

Uru is so strong that it requires extreme methods like the heart of a dying star, to be forged. Uru is not only easy to enchant, but it also absorbs magic and directs it, and enhances the natural attributes of its wielder.

Apart from Thor’s Mjolnir, there have been many other key Marvel characters that have used Uru in the past. Odin’s spear (Gungnir) and Odinsword, Destroyer‘s Armor, Beta Ray Bill’s Stormbreaker, Heimdall’s sword Hofund, to name a few. This is why Uru is unique to the Asgard dimension. Uru is one of the most prized exports of the dwarven miners of Asgard.

4. Dragonite

Perhaps, the latest entry in the list, Dragonite appeared first in the Guardians of the Galaxy #18 (1991). Dragonite is an extremely tough alloy, even capable enough of puncturing through Adamantium. It is a metal that has been believed to come from the future – the 31st century.

Dragonite is probably named after Dargo Ktor, the Thor of the 26th Century of Earth-691. Dragonite contains an Adamantium or Vibranium isotope – is still a topic of debate. But, in either case, it would result in it becoming the only thing that can break otherwise-unbreakable metals.

5. The Silver Surfer’s Skin

When Galactus created Silver Surfer, he made sure that Silver Surfer had a skin that was so strong that it can even survive massive forces of even Black holes. The forces binding together the molecules make up the silvery material that comprises the skin of the Surfer. It is very strong in nature. Hence, there are only a few known forces in the Universe great enough to overcome them.
