Doctor Strange introduced us to a world of magic and sorcery. After the death of the Ancient One, Doctor Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme. So who is the Sorcerer Supreme? According to Marvel, the Sorcerer Supreme is a “practitioner of the mystic or magic arts who has greater skills than all others or commands a greater portion of the ambient magical energies than any other organism on a given world or “dimension”. However after the events of Infinity Wars, Wong had to take over the position as strange was wiped out during the Blip. Wong continues to remain the Sorcerer Supreme till the events of Doctor Strange 2 and rightly so. Here are a few reasons why Wong is much better suited as the Sorcerer Supreme.
When you’re the Sorcerer Supreme you have hundreds of sorcerers looking up to you and waiting for your orders especially during times of peril. It’s a position that commands a lot of respect. Wong is a much more respected and liked person in general. Dr. Strange despite being powerful is not the most approachable or warm person. This is clearly seen in Doctor Strange 2. While preparing Kamar Taj for the upcoming attack of Scarlet Witch he manages to gather sorcerers from all around the world and commands them to secure the city. His disciples revere him and even bow down to him as is the custom.
Stephen Strange’s arrogance and know it all personality often makes him butt heads with others. Wong puts up with him and has incredible amounts of patience but that isn’t true for all. As seen in Infinity Wars, his personality immediately clashed with Iron Man. However, Wong’s humble and responsible nature makes him perfect for the job. Other superheroes trust him and thus communication is efficient. This is seen during the end-credits of Shang Chi as he converses with Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers.
Wong might have been a librarian in Doctor Strange but he has had multiple mystical missions over the years. He has also amassed immense knowledge by reading books and from his experience. Dr. Strange might have the skillset and power to be the Sorcerer Supreme but he definitely does not have enough experience. Wong is also well versed in the uses of ancient relics. He knows much more about this world than the others. We see his vast knowledge as he talks about the origin of infinity stones and even the Darkhold.
Dr. Strange thinks very less of the consequences of his actions and thus ends up in trouble quite often. Wong on the other hand is much more cautious. He knows how dangerous this world can be and how every spell can have unimaginable repercussions. He is much more responsible when it comes to the use of his powers. Carrying the weight of protecting the world from magical threats isn’t that easy after all. While, Stephen Strange’s reckless decision to cast the identity spell to help Peter Parker almost broke the multiverse.
Wong shows utmost humility and understands when to delegate tasks. Instead of doing everything himself, he identifies his weaknesses and steps aside when required. He trusts other sorcerers to do their jobs and knows how to prioritize. Doctor Strange on the other hand lets his ego and pride make his decisions rather then logic and rationale. He wants to solve every problem himself and show off his powers every chance he gets. While he may save the day, it’s Wong’s humility and trust that allows him to let Strange take the reigns. In fact even during Infinity Wars, Wong lets go of Strange when he is captured by Ebony Maw. He trust Strange to take care of himself and understands that there are more urgent matters that require his presence. If it was Dr. Strange he would’ve most likely gone after Maw thinking he could do it all.
It has always been said that the best students often make the worst teachers. This is absolutely true in this case. Wong, with his knowledge and experience is a much better teacher. His warm and approachable personality also gives him an added edge.
