According to Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who portrays Ravonna Renslayer, Loki season 2 will have a darker journey for the character and that she has a great deal of affection for her.
In the first season of the Disney+ series, the British actress made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as a former agent for the Time Variance Authority. Her Character through the ranks to become a judge, marking her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ravonna is in charge of Loki’s investigation into a series of TVA agent killings that have been committed by a variant of the god of mischief in recent years.
People were eager to learn more about the time-bending series’ future after rumors about Loki season 2 appeared on social media and other platforms and were finally confirmed in the mid-credits of the season 1 finale, and further information regarding the time-bending series’ future has been released.
Tom Hiddleston returns to lead the Loki ensemble, which also includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Owen Wilson, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Tara Strong, Sophia Di Martino, Sasha Lane, Richard E. Grant, and Jonathan Majors.
The series, created by Rick and Morty writer Michael Waldron, became an instant hit for Marvel Studios and Disney+ upon its debut, garnering rave reviews for its performances, plot, musical score, and visual effects, and becoming the most-watched series premiere of all time on the streaming service’s debut.
A few information about Loki season 2 were disclosed during an interview with PopCulture.com for her HBO Max series The Girl Before, in which Mbatha-Raw also appeared. The actress said that Ravonna Renslayer would face a more difficult situation in Season 2, while keeping her lips mostly quiet on the next season of the series.
Mbatha-Raw had this to say:
“Oh, my God. You know I can’t say anything about Loki. [Laughs] The Marvel police will come along and just take me away. But no, I’m excited that it’s happening, and I really love my character. I think she’s unexpected and complex. And so, I’m excited to go to some deeper, darker places with her as well.”
Ravonna Renslayer had a lengthy and tumultuous relationship with Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel comics. Ravonna, the daughter of a monarch from an alternative, future version of Earth, piqued Kang’s attention as he was seeking to take over her father’s realm. He fell in love with her, and after some time, she not only reciprocated his feelings, but she also sacrificed herself to save his life.
That, however, was not the end of their love, as two versions of Kang and Ravonna were subsequently formed. As a result, one version of Kang and Ravonna married happily ever after, whereas their counterparts had a far more turbulent relationship.
All of this is to say that in the comics, Ravonna Renslayer has a close relationship with Kang, which makes her and Kang’s presence in Loki intriguing to say the least.
It should be emphasized that the MCU version of Ravonna may not have any link to Kang at all. That’s a real possibility, and it wouldn’t be the first time Marvel has completely revamped an established comics character for the MCU.
Now, Kang is the kind of person who could play tricks with your mind. He is Deadly, yet a person who could take love beyond the galaxies. He has traveled through various multiverses, but fell in love with Ravonna.
With Loki S2, Kang could coax Ravonna into making deadly attempts at the lives of Mobius, B-15, Sylvie, and more who may be cast in the show; Ravonna’s love for Kang exceeds what anything could mean to her. So, its fair to say that her dark events may be related to supporting Kang leading to fatal deaths on the show.
Given Ravonna’s character development in Loki season 1, Mbatha-Raw’s promising prediction of a darker narrative in Loki season 2 might be a fascinating prospect. Initially introduced as a friend and potential love interest for Owen Wilson’s Mobius.
Ravonna would go on to establish herself as a villain, keeping the TVA’s dark secrets about all of its employees being variations hidden and serving as the de-facto Time-Keepers for Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains in the process.
Season 1 of Loki saw Ravonna escaping in search of the possibility of free will, while hunter B-15 used a variant of Renslayer to show to her fellow allies the truth of them being held as captives at the TVA.
As a side note, the first season of Loki ended on an emotionally charged cliffhanger, with Hiddleston’s character trapped in an alternate realm inhabited by statues of Kang the Conqueror.
With the confirmation of the multiverse’s most powerful adversary for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, many have speculated on who may be the show’s primary antagonist in season 2, with Mbatha Raw’s -comments on the show’s return serving as a possible clue to her antagonistic run.
With Loki season 2 reportedly set to begin filming in the summer, fans will have to wait with bated breath for any new information on Ravonna’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loki Season 2 is expected to finish production by Summer 2022 and premiere Early 2023.
