The DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran had unveiled their future plans for the franchise, including various upcoming movies but with few attached writers or directors.
The Flash: A New Era For DCEU
Andy Muschietti’s The Flash is expected to reset the DCEU. Featuring multiple versions of Batman, the film sees Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck reprising their roles. However, Affleck’s involvement in the DC Universe after the Summer 2023 release remains uncertain.
Affleck’s Stance On Directing In Gunn’s DC Universe
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck stated that he would “absolutely not” direct a film for James Gunn’s DC Universe, despite Gunn’s prior claims that the two were searching for a suitable project for Affleck to direct. Gunn had also mentioned that Affleck has been collaborating with the DC team.
Potential For Affleck To Direct Elseworlds Stories?
Affleck’s refusal to direct in the interconnected DC Universe may stem from the creative restrictions it imposes on creators. However, with DC Studios exploring Elseworlds stories, such as The Batman – Part II and Joker 2: Folie à Deux, there may still be an opportunity for Affleck to direct a standalone DC project with greater creative freedom.
