Spider-Man: No Way Home had everything a Spider-Man fan could hope for. There was mystery, emotional conflict, death, stakes, references to previous movies, and appearances from previous films as well.
Overall, it won’t be wrong to say that it was truly the experience of a lifetime. In the movie, Peter Parker begins by facing an identity crisis. To solve this problem he goes to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange so that he can do a spell to wipe out everyone’s memory of the whole incident.
This would ensure that everyone forgot that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. As a result, he as well as his loved ones could live in peace. At the end of the movie, this is what did happen. But before that Peter learned some lessons and lost someone valuable to him.
When he first went to Doctor Strange, the magician botched a reality-altering spell that nearly broke the multiverse and resulted in the first tangible presence of the multiverse in the MCU.
Villains from the previous Spider-Man movies came to fight, well, Spider-Man, and they were led by Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock. After that, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin arrived to cause trouble, and he ultimately became the main villain for the MCU Spider-Man threequel.
But that wasn’t what got theaters roaring. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s appearances in the movie through the Sling ring did. The two previous live-action movie’s Spidermen coming back was kept a secret by Sony and Marvel Studios.
This was a hard secret to keep since it was already leaked by various scoopers. But the studios as well as the actors associated with it tried their hardest to deny them. Andrew Garfield especially tried the hardest to derail fans.
But the internet wasn’t willing to back down no matter how many times, how many people denied this. As a result, soon set leaks started appearing. In the months leading up to the premiere of the movie, it was often said to be the worst kept secret of Hollywood.
However, Sony and Marvel didn’t back down. They stayed mum and didn’t reveal absolutely anything about Andrew and Tobey’s return till a week after the movie hit theaters.
One of the significant leaks that made rounds on the internet was a pic of Garfield’s Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man standing together. Now, The Amazing-Spider-Man actor has revealed what it felt like to keep on lying to the world in the face of leaks like that.
Sitting down for an interview with The Wrap, Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Amazing-Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield said that he was indeed affected by the multiple leaks making the rounds of the internet while he was simultaneously trying to keep it all a secret.
As per the actor, he told the studios, “Oh, my God, guys, what the hell is going on… here’s an image of me with Tobey!” even though “[he] worked so hard to keep it a secret.”
Garfield said that even though the leaked videos and images showed Maguire and Garfield together and in their Spidey suits, but Sony still told him to never officially confirm anything. They said, “No, no, we’re gonna keep it quiet.”
Here’s the full quote:
“I worked so hard to keep it secret that I was in Atlanta shooting… all these leaks were happening, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, guys, what the hell is going on? I’m working so hard here to stay secret, and then here’s an image of me with Tobey!’ And they’re like, ‘No, no, we’re gonna keep it quiet.’ ‘OK, I’ll keep denying it.'”
As for the lying, was Garfield annoyed or okay with it? The actor ultimately said that “[he] was happy to do it, but it was a lot of work on everyone’s part.” Here’s what he said:
“I was happy to do it, but it was a lot of work on everyone’s part. It obviously gave people a big thrill in the theater, and what more do you want from a theater experience than a thrill?… It’s been a rare experience to play that mass game of Werewolf with every single Spider-Man fan in the world. That’s been incredibly fun.”
It’s nice to hear that The Amazing Spider-Man actor was having a great time playing a game of “Werewolf.” The only difference in the game here was that he was playing it with fans all over the globe.
Previously, many people had pointed out that he seemed to be getting annoyed with the entire thing. And this was a natural conclusion to get to for many since in almost every interview he was asked about his inclusion in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Actually, it’s surprising to know that Marvel and Sony were this adamant to keep their part a secret even in the face of the humungous amount of leaks and evidence pointing to their involvement.
However, the entire charade worked since people flocked to the theaters to see for themselves if those leaks were right or the actors’ statements denying their involvement were. Everyone was glad to see that the leaks were right when Andrew and Tobey showed up.
But surely they loved that uncertainty leading up to that moment of confirmation. However, now fans can’t get enough of the two.
Fan campaigns have been launched to draw Sony and Marvel Studios’ attention. They desperately want The Amazing Spider-Man 3 for Andrew right now.
Along with this, they also want the duo to appear in other MCU movies. Right now, there’s no way to know what will happen. However, there are already leaks from film scoopers saying that they might show up in other MCU projects.
After all, the multiverse is the main thing that the MCU is exploring this year. As such, there will undoubtedly be several opportunities for the two web crawlers to show up.
Not to mention that there’s a Spider-Man villain-centric cinematic universe going on at Sony. Right now, there’s just Venom in that universe, but Morbius will most probably join it soon. However, it lacks a Spider-Man.
And as luck would have it, there are two Spidermen who are just waiting to show up in that universe. Tobey’s chances of becoming that universe’s Spidey is low. But Andrew’s chances are very much alive. Now we just have to wait and watch what happens.
