Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has taken a new hit after one of Russia’s top paratroop commanders was killed. An official from the Russian government said that Col. Sergei Sukharev, who was from Kostroma, had died. Before, Ukraine’s Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security said that he had been killed. Colonel Sergei Sukharev, the commander of the Kostroma Airborne Regiment, got lost in the “military exercises,” but he came home the right way, said a statement from the Ukraine. His deputy, Major Sergei Krylov, was killed with him, the report said.

A lot of people from the Kostroma regiment, one of Russia’s best-equipped units, were killed in this attack. It was also confirmed that Sergei Lebedev, Alexander Limonov, and Yuri Degtyaryov were also killed. In January, Sukharev led his troops back from Kazakhstan, where they had been sent after a wave of protests. He was on Russian TV at the time, and you could see him. Russia hasn’t said how many people are thought to have died in Ukraine in more than two weeks. People say it’s around 7,000; but there are also suspicions that the true number is being kept from Russia to keep support strong for the United States. Russian elite soldiers are among those who have died; on a daily basis in a military operation that Russia claims is meant to protect itself and deNazify Ukraine.

There were two wars in Chechnya after the USSR broke up. In 2008, the 331st Guards Parachute Assault Regiment was deployed to fight the Georgians and Ukraine’s conflict. Four generals have been killed in Ukraine so far this year. Even before the death of Sukharev, Ukraine’s interior ministry said that Major-General Oleg Mityaev, 47; the commander of the army’s 150th motorised rifle division; died while fighting near the city of Mariupol. Officials released a picture of what they said was his body on the battlefield.

When he was killed, he was the fourth Russian general that Ukraine claims to have killed and the 13th officer overall. As Putin’s invaders suffer heavy losses at the hands of determined Ukrainians; Ukraine claims to have taken out all of them. He was the last high-profile person killed in the war. On March 11, Major General Andrei Kolesnikov of the 29th Combined Arms Army became the third high-profile person killed in the war.

This came just four days after Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, 45, was killed. On March 3, a sniper is said to have killed Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, 47; who was deputy commander of the 41st combined arms army of the Central Military District. He was reportedly killed by a bullet. A lot of people have died in the third week of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Pentagon says that at least 7,000 Russian troops have been killed in the fighting; and another 14,000 to 21,000 have been wounded. This is about a fifth of the 150,000 men that Putin had on the border; before he gave the order to attack 21 days ago. The number of people fleeing Ukraine hit three million on Tuesday, the UN says. This is a big rise in people fleeing fighting and Russian bombing after Russia hit a military base near Lviv on Sunday. Some people from western Ukraine have now crossed the border to join them, as well.
