James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has revealed that a popular character from The Suicide Squad will return in the DC Universe (DCU).

Following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s announcement of the five films and five television series that will continue the DC Studios universe, there is still some uncertainty. Primarily because it has a few characters (and performers portraying them) from the previous “regime,” notably Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, who first appeared in David Ayers’ Suicide Squad. We now know that Davis will be back for a Waller program. Gunn starred with Waller in both The Suicide Squad and his HBO Max drama Peacemaker. Nonetheless, she is not the only Suicide Squad member on the way.

The Suicide Squad marked Gunn’s official entrance into the world of DC stories, telling them here on the big screen before he went on to film and script John Cena’s Peacemaker series the same year. Gunn announced that characters from this story will continue when Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters debuts in 2025, as he assumed his new position as head of DC Studios.

Creature Commandos will feature Sean Gunn’s Weasel, and Viola Davis will appear as part of her Waller solo series, expanding on the previous DC Universe adventures.

After the impact that The Suicide Squad had on Gunn and the overall DC story, fans are curious to see if characters from the film have a future on the big and small screens.

On February 26, Gunn took to Instagram to greet Peacemaker star Steve Agee a happy 54th birthday.

Gunn wished Agee well and hinted that the actor’s John Economos from the Suicide Squad spinoff show could perhaps be a character “you’ll see sooner than you think.”

“Happy Birthday to my great friend & collaborator & peak Economos (who you’ll see sooner than you think), ⁦Steve Agee⁩. Love you, buddy!”

Agee’s depiction of John Economos in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, which incorporated his distinct style of comedy, helped the character become a cult favorite. But now the focus is on how and when he’ll make his comeback to the DC universe after being away for more than a year.

Agee’s return project has yet to be confirmed. We are aware that the animated Creature Commandos series, which will include Weasel on the team, is currently in production and has connections to Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Moreover, Gunn has stated that at least some members of “Team Peacemaker” will make an appearance in the forthcoming Waller series.

Before Gunn’s new tale takes center stage, the DC Universe still has four other films coming out this year, which might provide an opportunity for Economos to play a different role in the story.

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods is the most likely choice after seeing Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland, make a brief appearance in the 2022 film Black Adam. Yet, considering that these two series have mostly been kept apart, even this movie might not be one that fans would put their confidence in as a Steve Agee encounter.

After their collaboration in “The Suicide Squad,” there is a good likelihood that Economos and Viola Davis will reunite in “Waller” for the Chapter 1 slate.

Also, it is unknown when Peacemaker Season 2 will begin filming. Agee had an important supporting role in Season 1 of the streaming series, and it’s assumed that he’ll have an identically big role when Cena’s antihero returns.

While it’s still not apparent from a canon or continuity perspective how his previous roles in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker will relate to the new planned films, Agee will now have the chance to develop his character more in this growing world.

Nonetheless, we do need to keep an eye out for him. We’ll simply have to wait and see where he shows up.

Peacemaker is available to stream on HBO Max.
