Dwayne Johnson’s DC movie Black Adam is performing decently worldwide. But it isn’t the runaway success that the actor or even DC fans were hoping the film to be. In fact, word on the streets is that it will need the China release to make a profit.

Dwayne Johnson enjoys quite a bit of popularity in China. So getting a big opening there would have not been impossible for the film. But that’s not a possibility anymore as the movie isn’t even getting a China release. And this mishap might have been caused by Marvel fans.

Black Adam Supposedly Isn’t Releasing In China Due To Marvel Fans

DC subreddits are buzzing with the news that Black Adam isn’t going to release in China. The reason is because in a recent interview, Pierce Brosnan, who plays Doctor Fate in the movie, was spotted wearing the Dalai Lama insignia.

As per reddit rumours, Chinese Marvel fans also seem to be behind this and have added fuel to the fire. They are alleged to have found the footage of Brosnan’s interview and circulated it in a bid to prevent the DC movie from getting a China release. However, we would urge you to remember that this is just speculation.

China Has Strict Censorship Laws

Black Adam isn’t the first big budget franchise movie to get banned in China. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, The Batman, and Spider-Man: No Way Home also didn’t get a China release.

The reason behind not earning a release is partly because China has strict censorship laws regarding the portrayal of demons and Satan in the story. The other part of the reason is that China is cracking down on Hollywood blockbusters. Marvel especially seems to be completely shut out of the country.

However, each of the above stated movies that didn’t get a China release did perform well at the worldwide box office. For example, Doctor Strange 2 grossed almost a billion and The Batman grossed over $700 million worldwide. As such, now the conversation has shifted to whether Hollywood even needs China anymore.

Coming back to Black Adam, the movie has grossed $250 million worldwide on a touted budget of $200 million. It remains to be seen how much the film ends up making in the long run without the China release.
