The MCU is upgrading Thor with a new set of armor, something he will require if he wishes to battle Gorr in Phase 4. Because the main villain of Thor: Love and Thunder, Gorr, the God Butcher, is more powerful than Hela. Chris Hemsworth’s fourth solo MCU film will pair him with Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, possibly his toughest opponent to date.
Gorr is a master at killing all-powerful beings, as is clear by his name. Thor: Love and Thunder appears to be preparing the thunder god for Gorr, by providing him with brand new armor, hinting at just how powerful the antagonist will be. Thor: Ragnarok brought Odinson face to face with one of his most formidable enemies to that point. After kicking Loki and Malekith to the curb, Thor’s evil sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), emerged from her imprisonment.
Hela was as comparable in her powers as Gorr, if not more. She proved this by destroying Mjolnir like it was a toy. This forced Thor to get ‘Stormbreaker’, and it looks like a new upgrade is on the way for him.
Chris Hemsworth appears wearing yellow-blue armor in Promo art for Thor: Love and Thunder. A costume like this is reminiscent of a costume from his Battle Armor in the comics, which Odinson wore against his strongest enemies. Interestingly, in the comic, this armor resulted from Thor’s fight with Hela. This fight never occurred in Thor: Ragnarok, so it makes sense to use the armor in Love and Thunder. This is Marvel’s way of telling fans that Gorr is certainly more powerful than Hela.
Gorr was not born as an all-powerful being like Hela. Initially, Gorr didn’t believe in gods because he sought them out to help his planet. However, the ‘deity battle’ went on before his eyes, resulting in a symbiote combining with Gorr and causing the Necrosword to be born. One deity died because of this, and thus ‘God-butcher’ was born. Considering this backstory, Gorr would be at the peak of his powers in Love and Thunder.
The thunder god will face some serious challenges, because his new enemy is like nothing he has seen so far. Even his new armor may not be enough in order to defeat Gorr. Hela’s power turned Asgard into ashes, cost Thor his eye, and killed Odin and Thor’s best friend. Hela is not as strong as Gorr, so fans can imagine what catastrophe awaits the son of Odin.
The good news is, Thor with his Battle Armor, along with a few more upgrades if the MCU allows, should be well-prepared to fight Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder.
