Producer Jon Landau Reveals A Big Time Jump For The Upcoming Avatar 4 Movie, Inspired By Boyhood, To Prevent Child Actors From Aging Out Of Their Roles.
Producer Jon Landau has shared new details on one of the changes that fans can expect to see in Avatar 4. According to Landau, the upcoming movie will feature a big time jump approximately one-third of the way through the film. Landau revealed that only the first act of Avatar 4 has been finished so far because the filmmakers needed to capture all the children’s performances while they were still young, to prevent them from aging out of their roles.
Boyhood
The decision to capture the children’s performances while they were still young was inspired by Richard Linklater’s 2014 coming-of-age epic, Boyhood. Director James Cameron wanted to avoid his actors outgrowing their roles, which is why the first act of Avatar 4 has been completed, and the rest will be shot in the future.
Landau praised the method used in Boyhood, saying he enjoys seeing the actors grow up as people, and he is proud of the young adults they have become. He believes that audiences will want to go on the journey with them as they develop over time.
Avatar 3
Despite the success of Avatar: The Way of the Water, Cameron hopes to set the franchise apart from other major franchises. While Marvel and DC introduce new villains, Avatar is sticking with the Resource Development Administration (RDA) as the main antagonist. However, future installments will introduce “additional adversaries and additional allies,” including an “intra-world villain” that could be introduced in Avatar 3.
Oona Chaplin has been cast as the leader of the fire tribe, Varang, in the third story, and Cameron has revealed that this new group of Na’vi won’t be as welcoming as the Omiticaya people were in Way of the Water. The filmmaker hopes to show a more negative side to the Pandora inhabitants and subvert what fans have come to expect from the franchise.
