The Spider-Man franchise has been going strong for years. And even though some of its films have been less successful than others, Sony has continued to churn them out. Now, a new project is in the works that promises to bring something different to the table: El Muerto, a spin-off starring the Latin trap superstar Bad Bunny as the wrestler version of Spider-Man.

Originally slated for release on January 12, 2024, rumors are now circulating that the film may be delayed. A tweet from insider account Big Screen Leaks suggests that it’s “very unlikely” that El Muerto will hit theaters on that date, as there has been no news about casting or filming.

While a delay may disappoint fans who are eagerly anticipating Bad Bunny’s big-screen debut. It’s not likely to have a significant impact on Sony’s Spider-Verse. Madame Web, another Spider-Man-adjacent movie, is set to hit theaters just over a month after El Muerto’s original release date, and Kraven, another upcoming entry in the franchise, is premiering in October 2023. Plus, the highly anticipated animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to be a box-office smash when it hits theaters in June.

If anything, a delay could work in Sony’s favor. Allowing for re-shoots and story changes based on audience reception to Kraven and Madame Web. And keeping the films close together makes it more likely that they will support each other, rather than compete.

El Muerto may not be one of the most popular characters in the Spider-Man comics. But with Bad Bunny attached and a fresh take on the superhero genre, it’s sure to draw attention. And even if it doesn’t hit theaters on January 12, 2024. Fans can rest assured that there are plenty of other Spider-Verse movies on the horizon to satisfy their superhero cravings.
