There are many stars who would love to join a Star Wars franchise since it would be a career-defining role for them. However, you can exclude Benedict Cumberbatch from those actors. After all, it looks like Doctor Strange isn’t much interested in joining Star Wars now.
However, it should be kept in mind that there isn’t any actual chatter of Cumberbatch signing up for a new role on a Star Wars show or movie. It’s just that fans have wanted to see him as Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the greatest villains of Star Wars for a long time.
Who Is Thrawn?
Thrawn was a Chiss race member and the one who controlled whatever was left of the fallen Empire before the First Order rose. He is expected to show up in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka after getting named in season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Obviously, Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor and would be a great casting for Thrawn.
Why Is Benedict Cumberbatch Not Interested In Playing Thrawn?
When Cumberbatch was asked about playing the role he was curious about it. But then his spirit deflated when it was said that he would have to put on blue make-up each and every day for playing Thrawn.
So in an interview with Collider, he joked and said that he won’t be looking blue and there’s no way he will be putting on the paint. But he had a reason behind rejecting the role- he wanted to spend more time with his children and sitting in a chair all day for putting on blue make-up will cut down on that precious time.
In the full quote he said:
“That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue. I turned the air blue, very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a make-up chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that.”
If it was any other actor then he would be jumped to play someone as iconic as Thrawn in Star Wars but Cumberbatch has enough luxury to reject such coveted roles. After all, he has the sequel of Doctor Strange coming up. Also, if rumours are to be believed then he will be playing an important role in the MCU’s Phase 4. So he is all booked and busy right now without having to worry about what role he is going to get next.
