“Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3” is going to be the end of an era. Already theories are flying about multiple characters dying in the movie. One actor has even confirmed that this is his last MCU movie, thus, affirming that his character is indeed dying. But it’s not all doom and gloom. A new character is getting introduced in GotG 3 as well. And it’s none other than Adam Warlock. So who is he? Director James Gunn has labelled him as a baby who definitely isn’t up to any good.

The post-credits scene of “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” showed Ayesha creating Adam Warlock in a cocoon to take down the Guardians after they double-crossed the golden Sovereign leader. The trailer of Volume 3 showed Will Poulter’s Warlock out and about going after our beloved intergalactic miscreants.

But what does James Gunn think of the character? In an interview with Empire, the director said that Adam Warlock is basically a baby. Read his full statement below:

“What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”

But which side is this baby leaning on? Good or evil? Gunn says it’s more complicated. He says:

“It’s kind of more complicated than that. But he’s definitely not a good guy.”

Even though he might not be a hero right now, but in the comics he eventually joins the side of good. In fact, he becomes a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy as well. This happens after he rebels against his purpose and seeks a higher destiny than just acting as a destroyer.

The Director Talks About Casting Will Poulter

Why did James Gunn specifically cast Will Poulter for the role of Adam Warlock? The director has shared his ideas on the matter. In the interview he has said:

“People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock.’ I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future.”

It looks like GotG 3 is just setting up the character arc of Warlock because Gunn has teased that he will become an important character later on in the MCU. After all, if there is an all-out war against Kang, then Adam Warlock is the one character who should be on the side of the Avengers.
