After the Clone Wars and the subsequent division of the Mandalorians before the events of the Original Trilogy, the Empire carried out a severe counterattack on Mandalore. This killed off the whole planet in a near-genocide of the Mandalorians.
Now, The Book of Boba Fett has revealed new information through flashbacks about the incident and the character behind the tragic event. In episode 5, when the Armorer uses Djarin’s beskar spear to make armor for Grogu, she talks about the Night of a Thousand Tears.
For the first time in Star Wars history, we get to see the Purge of Mandalore on-screen. She notes that Mandalore’s previous ruler and Moff Gideon had roles to play in the tragic event.
At the end of the flashback, it’s clear that Bo’s mission to redeem and liberate Mandalore isn’t an easy job. As such, this helps show Din’s future with the Darksaber.
As per the Armorer and Paz Vizsla, Moff Gideon has “the blood of millions” on his hands. We already knew from season 1 of The Mandalorian that Moff Gideon talked about how Imperial gunships opened fire on Mandalorian recruits.
It’s also implied that thwas is where Gideon took the Darksaber from Kryze, the new ruler at the time of Mandalore’s great fall. But it’s only now that we are told how he was truly involved.
Vizsla and Armorer’s words suggest that he was behind the genocide, probably. Djarin believes that the New Republic will kill him for the crimes he committed. But the Armorer isn’t that easily sold.
After all, the New Republic might have used Moff to find other surviving Imperial groups. So he might not get the punishment he deserves.
Along with this, the Armorer says that the Death Watch was able to survive only since they were working in secret on Mandalore’s moon Concordia.
The Armorer notes that if the Darksaber isn’t won by fair combat, it can curse its wielder. This is what happened to Bo-Katan Kryze, who was gifted the Black saber by Sabine Wren.
So she didn’t earn it. And this event was followed by the disastrous Purge of Mandalore. Thus, proving the existence of the curse. So it’s likely that Kryze is viewed by several surviving Mandalorians as the one who was responsible for the planet-wide tragedy.
It looks like the Purge of Mandalore is worse than the Jedi Purge that happened due to Order 66. Even though the galaxy lost the entire Jedi Order, the Jedi were just one group.
On the other hand, Mandalore was an entire planet that was almost decimated. The numbers seem to say that the Night of a Thousand Tears was an event that was worse than the Jedi Purge.
However, things should change for Mandalore now that Din Djarin has the Darksaber. So now he can redeem and liberate his planet. Also, it’s clear that Bo-Katan will need Din in season 3 if she wants to unite the planet again.
How will these two work together? That remains to be seen. But for the time being, you can check out season 1 of The Book of Boba Fett, streaming on Disney+.
