Ever Since the post-credit scene of Ms Marvel‘s last episode and SDCC 2022, the buzz has resurfaced for The Marvels. (For full coverage of Marvel Studios at SDCC 2022, please read Marvel’s Plans For Phase 5 And 6 Revealed At SDCC 2022).

The 2023 flick is a direct sequel to Brie Larson’s first solo outing in Captain Marvel (2019). However, if rumors are to be believed this new Carol Danvers adventure could very well be a – Musical (in parts).

The Marvels

The Marvels will witness Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau (aka Photon), Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan (aka Ms Marvel) colliding with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel). It will also see Samuel L. Jackson reprise his role as Nick Fury. The British actress Zawe Ashton is on board as the main villain, who is rumored to be a gender-swapped take on Kree warrior Ael-Dan. It will be directed by Nia DaCosta and have the screenplay written by Megan McDonnell.

The Rumor

According to the word on street these days, The Marvels will introduce a world where speaking through rhymes and songs is the only form of communication. This rumor surfaced after it was announced that DC’s Joker sequel – Joker: Folie à Deaux will also be a musical. However, The Marvel releases before Joker 2.

This was reported by KC Walsh on Twitter, and it’s been getting the entire Marvel fandom talking.

Anyone else hearing that The Marvels has a “musical” element to it? pic.twitter.com/sYJHYpSrxS

While The Marvels having a potential musical section comes as a surprise, there is a basis for the concept in the comics. 2014’s Captain Marvel #9 took Captain Marvel to the planet Aldana, where all living beings spoke to each other in rhyme and music. Maybe that is the case with the movie.

Since the rumor broke out, the fans have expressed their mixed reactions to it. To the tweet posted above, various users are commenting their views on it. Some of them are –

A person added: “If The Marvels truly has a musical scene then it’s already getting an A+ from me.”

A second user said: “The Marvels being a musical sounds so f***ing cool (or at least partially). I’ve been pushing for a superhero musical for a while, it’s the one genre that hasn’t been touched by the whole superhero boom so I think it’s time for one.”

Another person wrote: “I don’t wanna hear anyone complaining about The Marvels having musical elements when Brie Larson gave us THIS”, and then the user posted a video of Larson in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Even the famous Youtuber and film critic, Grace Randolph on her channel “Beyond The Trailer” while reviewing Thor: Love & Thunder, had this to say about The Marvels

I just heard something about The Marvels which was so silly that I was shocked it wasn’t in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I was like, ‘What’s that doing in The Marvels?’
I mean, I think that some movies should be silly and are very succesfully silly but I don’t think they should all be silly. Some people felt Thor: Love and Thunder was too silly. So… I don’t know, man.

Though not directly, she probably was referring to this ‘Part Musical’ aspect of the movie. And if she was, it could prove to be a hard gamble for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios.

The Truth behind Musical

Although in the past, Marvel Studios has never shied away from experimenting with different genres in their movies. Brie Larson herself is known for her vocal capabilities – e.g. 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and her solo album, titled Finally Out of P.E. (2005).

So far, none of the executives at Marvel Studios or any of the cast members has officially confirmed the news. Hence, this all must be taken with a grain of salt. As with every other rumor, best not to put too much stock in this until we learn more.

In the post-credit scene of Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel had seemingly swapped their places. Maybe the movie will see Ms Marvel suddenly appearing on a world (Aladna) whose inhabitants converse in rhymes and songs. The rest of the movie then follows them as they try to reunite. But these all are just mere speculations.

Marvel Studios has included a few musical sequences in earlier projects. For example – Eternals, Hawkeye and Ms Marvel. But a character or characters belting out a full song/dance number would be a first. Even if it’s true, fans still believe the folks at Marvel Studios can pull it off.
