It was a fitting end to some of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ journeys, including Chris Evans’ Captain America in Marvel’s Endgame. Star-Spangled Avenger’s story ended happily, with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter giving the character a proper ending. Steve Rogers, on the other hand, remains the subject of unanswered questions.
The introduction of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the MCU’s new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a major step forward. Despite this, the Disney+ series didn’t bring up whether Rogers still lives or even give some indication as to where he might be hiding.
Evans made some interesting comments about Captain America’s possible return in a new interview, while fans are still waiting for a definitive answer.
The question of Chris Evans returning to the MCU as Captain America was raised as the actor prepared for the forthcoming global release of Lightyear.
“Seems to be something people would like to see,” Evans said in an interview with Comicbook about his return being focused on the Star-Spangled Avenger returning the six Infinity Stones after Avengers: Endgame. When asked about his plans for the future, the MCU veteran stated that it would be “a tall order” for him because of his “good run”.
If the “perfect” conditions exist, Evans says he’s open to returning to the “precious” role despite his reservations.
“That seems to be something people would like to see. I don’t want to disappoint anybody but it’s tough to… It was such a good run and I’m so happy with it. It’s so precious to me. It would have to be perfect. It just would be scary to rattle something that is, again, so, so dear to me. That role means so much to me. So, to revisit it, it would be a tall order.”
When Deadline first reported that Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America in an unnamed Marvel property in January 2021, they stated that “the door is open for a second film.” In addition, the outlet stated that the disclosed project is distinct from Captain America 4 starring Anthony Mackie.
Chris Evans’ Captain America could reap the benefits of the MCU’s multiverse exploration by making a surprise reappearance. Although the actor’s recent comments made it clear that he would return to the role if the story made sense, a narrative set in the past would be the best fit.
To save the story of Steve Rogers’ journey to bring back the six Infinity Stones, Marvel Studios may have decided against showing it in this film. Rogers and the Red Skull’s long-awaited reunion and a high-stakes narrative provide ample content.
Steve Rogers’ excursions with Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow and Sam Wilson in between the events of Civil War and Infinity War make sense for a Steve Rogers-centric film.
To be sure, a cameo in another Avengers film would be the best way to make a big comeback for the MCU veteran.
While Avengers 5 is still a long way off, it would be a good idea for Evans to make a Portals-like entrance like what happened in Avengers: Endgame when he returns. Even if Steve Rogers doesn’t end up saving the day, it would be in character for him to share his experience with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ current team.
A cameo appearance by Steve Rogers in Captain America 4 could pave the way for a future solo film of his. Whatever the case may be, the MCU is a better place because of the willingness of Chris Evans to return.
