In last week’s episode of House of the Dragon, King Viserys’s council made Aegon II Targaryen king after his death. His brother Aemond Targaryen had shown interest in the iron throne, and Aegon clearly despises the idea of ruling the kingdoms. As season one of House of the Dragon is concluding this Sunday, there is no lack of ideas circling the web as fans take over scene after scene in an attempt to foresee the huge surprises for the Targaryen family that the series and its precursor, Game of Thrones, are famous for.

In episode 8 of House of the Dragon, we find out that Aegon Targaryen has been married to his sister Helaena Targaryen (yes, incest in common for the Targaryens). However, in HOTD episode 9, fans found something peculiar. Based on a scene from the ninth episode, “The Green Council,” a recent idea posits that Alicent’s son Aegon may not be the father of Helaena’s children after all!

Aemond Targaryen May Have Wanted To Marry Helaena When He Defends Her From Aegon

When Aegon protests that he shares with Helaena, Prince Aemond Targaryen defends her by stating that she is their sister and will be queen. Aemond says he would have wedded Helaena if Alicent had planned their marriage instead because the younger Targaryen recognizes that it is his role in their house. Aemond is far more concerned and politically aware than Aegon. Therefore, he knows the significance of marrying inside House Targaryen. Aemond Targaryen, rider of the largest dragon Vhagar, may not have a strong wish to wed Helaena in House of the Dragon. Still, he believes he may have handled the responsibilities of such a marriage better than Aegon.

Twitter on Targaryen Love Triangle

After Alicent bursts in with her father hunting for her firstborn kid, allegedly Helaena’s twins can be seen muttering “Aemond” rather than Aegon in a film shared by Twitter user Fanny (@darklesdarkling). They allege that when Alicent speaks “father” to Otto, the kids cry out for their “true” father.

Many others agree with Fanny’s notion, with Twitter user ‘Lily of the Vally’ (@Deedamai) (nice Breaking Bad reference), as only Aemond Targaryen has straight hair. In contrast, both Aegon and Helaena have curly hair. Throwback to when Ned Stark found out that all of the Baratheon children were black of hair and Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella from Game of Thrones were golden-haired.

Aemond Targaryen appears to treat Helaena nicer than Aegon, and given Aegon’s self-destructive conduct, it’s understandable that Helaena would seek solace and friendship elsewhere. However, as others in the original tweet’s comments have noted, this clip is insufficient to prove this idea. It’s not completely out of the question that Aemond may be the father, not Aegon. Some assert that this is why Aemond walks right into Helaena’s room and later admits to being next in line for the iron throne after Aegon rather than Aegon’s son. Still, for the time being, a secret relationship between Aemond and Helaena is predicated more on speculation than what the show has displayed to us.
