Ever since Darth Maul graced our screens in the very first Star Wars Prequel Trilogy movie, he has been loved by a legion of fans. However, the characters earlier-than-expected death cast a shadow over his further presence in the Star Wars movies going forward. But thankfully, that wasn’t going to be his end after all.
Darth Maul’s Canon Star Wars Presence
Some years later, the revered Sith Lord came back in The Clone Wars saga. But this time he was a feared rogue agent who was going to get revenge from the people who had wronged him. Of course, the list has Obi-Wan Kenobi’s name on it.

The two of them battled multiple times but the last time they met was in the deserts of Tatooine. There the self-exiled and wandering Obi-Wan Kenobi killed him and ended his painful misery.
What Were George Lucas’s Plans About Darth Maul?
Maul was definitely a great side character, especially in the last season of Dave Filoni’s The Clone Wars. However, apparently, Darth Maul would have been treated a lot differently if George Lucas’s vision had been followed about the Sequel Trilogy.

George Lucas had plans for making Maul the main villain of his story with Leia, Luke, as well as the New Jedi Order, all working together to destroy the Sith Lord’s galaxy-wide criminal gang. Fans came to know about these plans because a Redditor shared a pic of the Star Wars Archives Episode 1-3 The Prequels book where it’s mentioned.
In the book, Lucas reveals that Darth Maul would have become the entire galaxy’s so-called “godfather of crime” along with Darth Talon. Additionally, plans were for Luke to rebuild the entire Jedi Order right from the very beginning as Leia helped develop the fledgling New Republic.

That’s not all. Had Lucas’s plans become reality, the Sequel Trilogy would have ended with Leia becoming the Galactic Senate’s Supreme Chancellor. This would have implied that it was Leia who was the Chosen One.

It’s truly disheartening that we couldn’t see Lucas’s actual vision come to life. But there’s still hope that we can see it perhaps in some capacity further down the line.
