DC Studios has just revealed the first new character to be added to the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. While Superman: Legacy will launch James Gunn and Peter Safran’s theatrical slate, the first project of the reboot will be Creature Commandos. This seven-episode animated feature for HBO Max will focus on a team of both old and new characters, and its casting announcements have officially begun.

Frank Grillo Cast As Rick Flag Sr.

Former Marvel Star Frank Grillo Jumps Ship To Dc’s Creature Commandos, Igniting Fandom Wars

According to The Wrap, Frank Grillo has been cast as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos. This news follows Grillo’s announcement that he’s leaving the MCU as Crossbones to join James Gunn’s new DCU.

Rick Flag Sr. is a character from the comics who led the original Suicide Squad during World War II before joining Task Force X. He was known for his leadership skills, adherence to protocol, and strong sense of duty. In the upcoming project, he is believed to be the father of Rick Flag Jr., who was played by Joel Kinnaman in 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Grillo is expected to voice Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos but may have a larger role in the future. James Gunn has hinted that the voice actors in the animated series may also play their characters in live-action as the DC reboot progresses.

Along with Rick Flag Sr., the Creature Commandos team includes Nina Mazursky, Eric Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, Dr. Phosphorus, the Bride of Frankenstein, and Weasel. Sean Gunn has already been confirmed to voice Weasel after playing the character in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Further casting announcements are expected to follow, as James Gunn claimed to be “almost done casting” in February. The selection of voice talent and on-screen acting skills were not the only criteria for casting; the actors also had to be committed to the burgeoning franchise in the long term.

As Creature Commandos progresses, fans are eager to see who else will be joining Frank Grillo and Sean Gunn in the series. With the DC Studios reboot well underway, fans can expect to see more exciting announcements in the near future.
