DC Studios co-CEO, Peter Safran, recently hinted at the possibility of recasting actor Jason Momoa in the upcoming DC Universe reboot, despite his strong relationship with Warner Bros. The Aquaman actor has confirmed one more DC appearance in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but his role beyond that is uncertain. Reports suggest that more Justice League superheroes may also be recast.

Safran has praised Momoa’s acting, saying that few superhero castings are “more perfect than Momoa as Aquaman,” and expressed his desire to continue working with Momoa for “many years to come,” possibly in a different role.

Momoa himself has indicated that he is “extremely, extremely excited” about his future in the DC Universe and loves the studio bosses. He has also expressed his interest in playing Lobo, a Superman villain, in the rebooted universe.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Momoa’s future as Aquaman, he seems to have a secure future in the DC Universe after the reboot. Even if Aquaman ends up being recast, DC Studios is likely to find another role for Momoa, possibly as Lobo.

The future of other franchises produced by Safran, including Shazam, Aquaman, and Blue Beetle, is unclear, given that he and James Gunn are equal co-CEOs. The fate of Momoa’s role may also depend on the success of Aquaman 2.

DC Studios will likely avoid recasting any characters related to the three movies left this year – The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 – to avoid dooming them to box office failure, especially after Shazam 2’s disappointing results.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters on December 20.
