A new era for Disney and their most cherished franchises began with the Mouse House acquiring 20th Century Fox. A deal with Sony Pictures had been reached for Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the X-Men were still missing from the picture. Now that Marvel Studios owns Fox, they can tell stories about mutants like Deadpool and Cable, two of Marvel’s most popular characters.

The two Deadpool films from Fox have elevated the Merc with a Mouth to stardom in recent years. After Disney’s purchase of Fox, Deadpool 3 was unofficially declared as being in pre-production.

Since its announcement, the threequel has been shrouded in mystery and has sparked a lot of speculation. The Deadpool franchise’s signature seasoned bent is the biggest of these concerns. Many people are concerned that the Deadpool brand will lose some of its luster once the movie moves to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As Deadpool 3’s script work continues, one of the film’s writers has spoken out about this very subject.

Can Deadpool be smothered by Disney?

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Deadpool 3, addressed concerns from fans that the protagonist would be redacted now that they were working for Disney.

It was a “thrill” for Reese to work on the project because they had finally reunited “the band,” but this time under the “background [of] the MCU.”

“It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming—Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to.”

While reassuring fans that they will continue to poke fun at other Marvel/DC characters and pop culture in general, the duo said that the film would proceed with this trend “Even though the sequel is now under Disney’s umbrella, “Deadpool will remain Deadpool.” When asked by the kid-friendly studio if the Merc with a Mouth should be cleaned, Wenick replied, “Don’t worry about it,” he said. According to him, Disney has been “very supportive” of the R-rating requirements for the character;

“They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

It doesn’t matter what happens on screen; this is a new beginning for Deadpool movies. Nothing is off-limits when you’re a member of the Marvel Studios family. However, the public’s concerns about Marvel Studios’ potential sanitization of the character are warranted.

Brand image is extremely important to Disney, and they do everything they can to project a certain image in the minds of their customers. For Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool is a character that pushes his or her identity to its limit.

The studio, on the other hand, appears to be letting the Deadpool 3 team be themselves and make the movie they want to make – at least for now. They understand what makes the Deadpool series unique, and they don’t want to mess with what’s working.

Even though the MCU could use a more mild-mannered PG-13 version of the character in other contexts, the Merc with a Mouth deserves his own film where he can be the obnoxious anti-hero he merits to really be.
