The Marvels has been delayed. But why? Let us decode this secret and what effect it will have on other MCU projects
“The Marvels” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, was originally going to release on 28th July, 2023. But now its release date has been changed to 10 November 2023. The change was sudden and made the entire MCU fandom scratch its head. So why did Marvel Studios suddenly postpone the movie? Let us decode what’s going on.
Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man 3
Neither Disney nor Marvel Studios have announced any official reason for the delay, and they probably won’t even in the future. But MCU fans are speculating a variety of reasons for “The Marvels” getting pushed back. Number one on the list is the poor performance of “Ant-Man 3.”
As of now, the recently released superhero flick is sitting with a abysmal 48% on the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregate site. It has also only been able to churn up a B Cinemascore that’s on par with movies with “Eternals” and “Elektra.” The movie received worse scores than last year’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” that got a B+.
The major complaint regarding the film isn’t just the writing, but also its CGI. Many viewers have complained that the Quantum Realm looks fake and artificial. If the CGI quality is the same for “The Marvels,” a film that’s rumored to be set almost completely in space, then Marvel Studios is in big trouble.
So it’s possible that Marvel wants the movie to look as good as possible and that’s why they are sending it to spend more time in post production.
The Marvels poster
Marvel Studios is releasing only 3 movies in 2023. “Ant-Man 3” has released, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” is releasing on 5 May, 2023 and “The Marvels” was supposed to get released on 28 July 2023. However, this release pattern had a problem.
The issue is that there’s no MCU movie to release in the latter half of the year. As such, Marvel Studios will fail to capitalize on the cinema going audiences during the holidays.
So pushing back “The Marvels” ensures that there’s a movie that the studio can release during the winter months. Also, in November, the movie won’t have to fight with films like “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” for a box-office share since the competition is less during that time.
Nick Fury in Secret Invasion
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that only 2 MCU Disney+ projects are confirmed for release in 2023. These are “Secret Invasion” and season 2 of “Loki.” At 2022’s SDCC, Kevin Feige said that “Secret Invasion” was planned for a Spring release date.
However, since “Secret Invasion” is supposed to be a continuation of “Captain Marvel” and is rumored to lead into “The Marvels,” so Marvel will definitely release it close to the movie’s release date.
So we can expect the show to drop sometime in August or September. As for “Loki” season 2, it was announced with a Summer 2023 release date in mind. However, with “The Marvels” getting shifted, we might see it getting bumped down to May or June.
However, it actually remains to be seen how the movie getting shifted affects other MCU projects.
Stay tuned for more details.
