The third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy introduces a new character from the original Marvel Comics named Phyla. She has a significant role in the Guardians’ mythology in the comics and is set to have a future beyond her initial debut in the MCU.

Phyla-Vell is the fourth Captain Marvel in the original comics and later becomes the next Quasar, inheriting the Quantum Bands from their original wielder, Wendell Vaughn. In the comics, Phyla and her partner Moondragon team up with Adam Warlock and come up against the High Evolutionary. Phyla also joins the 2008 roster of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics.

Phyla is played by Kai Zen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, where she becomes a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy led by Rocket Raccoon after the defeat of the High Evolutionary. Phyla’s artificial race received multiple genetic modifications, making them physically and mentally superior while also requiring very little rest or food.

Phyla’s powers in the MCU are currently unknown, but the first post-credits scene sees her eyes and hands beginning to glow, indicating that she likely possesses some levels of cosmic power that have yet to be revealed. In the comics, Phyla-Vell’s powers vary depending on the role she is currently in. As Quasar, Phyla has a wide array of powers thanks to the Quantum Bands, granting her abilities involving various forms of energy manipulation.

Phyla’s Future In The MCU

Phyla is set to continue being a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team, alongside Groot, Kraglin, Blurp, Cosmo the Space Dog, and Adam Warlock. It is unknown if this new team will get their own movie, but appearances in future MCU films are inevitable. Marvel fans should expect to see more of Phyla and her new team in the MCU’s future following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
