Doctor Strange 2 Theory: Who Are In The MCU Illuminati?

The new Doctor Strange trailer has wowed fans and hyped them up for the upcoming movie. In the trailer, it looks like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange take a trip through multiple alternate realities.

This might force the attention of the Illuminati, a multiversal superhero team. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is definitely going to have multiple cameos of beloved characters and their alternate versions.

And some of them will definitely be in the Illuminati. In the pages of Marvel comics, the Illuminati are a secret group of extremely influential and intelligent superheroes who take decisions on world-saving issues.

The original team was made up of Black Panther, Iron Man, Professor X, Namor, Black Bolt, and Mister Fantastic. And in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, we see this team in live-action.

We don’t know which members will comprise this team in the MCU, but we have some guesses:

Mr. Fantastic

Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards

Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards

Reed Richards or Mr. Fantastic is another original member of the Illuminati, and he could also show up in the MCU’s Illuminati. As one of the smartest Marvel characters, his presence in Doctor Strange 2 makes sense.

Also, he’s an ancestor of Nathaniel Richards, a.k.a. Kang the Conqueror. And Kang is expected to be a core MCU villain in Phase 4. We will get to see him in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next.

We will be seeing Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four movie from Jon Watts, and maybe this will be his debut in the MCU.

Or maybe, the version we will see in Doctor Strange 2 will be a more seasoned version like Gruffud’s Reed Richards. This will help bring the previous Marvel movies into the MCU as a whole.

Captain Carter

On the new poster of Doctor Strange 2, there’s a shattered piece of glass with the reflection showing Captain Carter’s shield. So she could be a new member of the MCU’s Illuminati.

We saw Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter/Captain Carter in What If…?, and it’s certainly time to bring the character into live-action. Her leadership skills, power, and intelligence make her a perfect fit in the group of multiversal protectors.

Clea

In the comics, Clea is a Dark Dimension sorceress. She left Dormammu’s realm to learn the Mystic Arts with Doctor Strange. But we have yet to see her in the MCU.

But maybe Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could introduce her. We think Clea might be a candidate for the MCU’s Illuminati because of the appearance of Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer in the trailer.

There it looks like she has put on her costume to travel with Doctor Strange and America Chavez throughout the multiverse. Who knows, this Christine might be a variant trained in the Mystic Arts.

Professor X

Patrick Stewart as Professor X

The biggest reveal from the trailer is definitely of Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier saying, “We should tell him the truth.” In the comics, Professor X is a core member of the Illuminati.

He represents the mutants when discussing worldly issues and threats. Now that Marvel has got back the rights to the X-Men, they have got the chance to bring back timeless portrayals of characters.

And one of them is Patrick Stewart’s, Professor X. Also, this will officially make him a part of the MCU.

Defender Strange

Previous promo material for Doctor Strange 2 has confirmed that at least one more variant of the sorcerer supreme is going to be there, apart from the evil Strange we saw in the first trailer.

This variant is called Defender Strange, and he wears a red-and-black suit. Also, his hair has prominent white streaks on either side.

We don’t know where he comes from, but guessing by the ‘Defender’ in his title, he could be one of the multiversal protectors.

Baron Mordo

Baron Karl Mordo

Baron Karl Mordo

We last saw Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo at the end of the first Doctor Strange film. He aimed to rid the planet of sorcerers

By the time we get to see Doctor Strange 2, maybe Mordo’s desire to rid the world of sorcerers might have strengthened. Or he might have realized that the multiverse needs magic users to protect it by killing those who do it harm.

Maybe this is what makes his line “the greatest threat to our universe… is you” so ominous. Now, Mordo could have abandoned his mission to join forces with Defender Strange.

Or maybe, the long-haired Mordo we see here is from another universe. Maybe in this universe, he protects his reality as the Sorcerer Supreme.
