Set up everything we know about Doctor Strange 3 now that Doctor Strange 2 has been released in theaters. In light of the fact that the original Avengers and their allies have largely disbanded and been replaced by more established heroes, it wasn’t clear if Doctor Strange 2 would be Benedict Cumberbatch’s final outing as the Mystic Arts Master. Even if Doctor Strange 3 isn’t made, the sequel sets up a lot for it.

Doctor Stephen Strange’s trial for his spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which cracked the multiverse, was widely expected to be a plot point in Doctor Strange 2. The Illuminati, on the other hand, were more concerned with Strange’s journey through the multiverse with America Chavez and the crimes of the other Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange was seen as a greater threat than Scarlet Witch and the Darkhold spellbook.

However, despite the fact that Multiverse of Madness wasn’t quite what audiences had hoped for, it didn’t fail to lay the groundwork for the next chapter in the Doctor Strange series. In fact, it laid the groundwork for a potentially exciting third film. Discover everything we know about Doctor Strange 3, from its upcoming release date to its rumored actors and plot.

Is a third Doctor Strange film in the works?

Doctor Strange 2's Clea Sets Up A Returning Villain Stronger Than Thanos

Marvel has kept a low profile when it comes to future films beyond those already announced for Phase 4. There’s no reason why Marvel can’t make a third Doctor Strange movie if Benedict Cumberbatch is up for the challenge. Marvel Studios isn’t in a rush to announce new projects now that the decade-long Infinity Gauntlet arc has come to an end with Avengers: Endgame. Although Doctor Strange 3 could be announced as soon as the MCU’s Multiverse of Madness is released, it is possible that the studio will wait until a solid story is in place before announcing another film.

Who Will Reappear In The Movie?

Benedict Cumberbatch’s return is a given in any Doctor Strange 3 movie. Furthermore, Benedict Wong will return as the Sorcerer Supreme Wong. This is a certainty as well. After that, things start to get a little dicey for the cast of Doctor Strange 3. Christine Palmer from Doctor Strange 2 could make a return, as could Xochitl Goméz’s America Chavez, thanks to Rachel McAdams’ increased prominence in the sequel. Similarly, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo, whether in the Illuminati or MCU incarnations, could make a comeback. Clea, played by Charlize Theron in Doctor Strange 2’s mid-credits scene, was also confirmed to be making her MCU debut.

The Ending Sets Up a New Story for Doctor Strange 3

The scene in the middle of the credits titled “Multiverse of Madness” sets the stage for the plot of Doctor Strange 3. The actions of Doctor Strange in the sequel have resulted in an incursion, which means that the two universes have come together. After the first incursion, other universes rushed in to fill the void left by the universe that had ceased to exist in the second “Secret Wars” event in the comics. This caused a chain reaction of incursions that led to the collapse of the entire multiverse. Clea may have sought out Doctor Strange in order to stop this from happening.

Since the first Doctor Strange episode six years ago, there’s also question of what Mordo has been up to in the MCU. Now that the good doctor has dabbled with the Darkhold, it’s likely that Mordo will return at some point. While the events of the last few years may have weakened his resolve, it’s possible that Strange will team up with him to stop the incursion.

If a third Doctor Strange film is in the works, it will be some time before audiences can see it in a theater. The release dates for all of Marvel’s upcoming films have already been established through the end of 2023. Other movies in development, such as Blade, Captain America 4, and the Fantastic Four, have yet to receive release dates but are already in the process of development. A Doctor Strange 3 release in late 2024 is unlikely, even if Marvel is already working on it. It is more likely that a Doctor Strange 3 will be released in 2025 or 2026.
