Fans are eager to continue the story of The Mandalorian and its spin-offs, even with new Star Wars Disney+ offers such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor. Lucasfilm has great plans for the future, which will be addressed in The Mandalorian Season 3 as the MandoVerse expands with The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, and Skeleton Crew. Well, Jon Favreau had more to say on that.

Season 3 will premiere on Disney+ in February 2023, and plans for Season 4 and beyond are already in the works after footage was recently displayed at Star Wars Celebration. Over a year ago, Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito teased the fourth instalment, promising that the next two seasonswouldl be when viewers “truly start to get answers.”

Despite these remarks, Lucasfilm has yet to make an official statement about what will happen after season three. Fans will most likely have to wait until the end of Season 3 for a formal announcement, but one of the show’s creators just shared an interesting Season 4 update.

Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian, confirmed to Cinema Blend at Star Wars Celebration that he has begun writing Season 4 of the show.

After expressing his admiration for the television format, Favreau revealed that the writing for Ahsoka by Dave Filoni is “very much informing” his work on The Mandalorian Season 4:

“We’re really fortunate with television that we don’t have to compress everything into an hour and a half or two hours. Slowly, we begin to share stories. So now that Dave [Filoni] is working on Ahsoka, it’s heavily influencing my writing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It gets – to put it another way – more exact.”

Favreau went on to say that writing the Disney+ series is different now than it was when it first started sincetheire are more questions to answer and components to connect, making for a “really fertile field” for storytelling:

“I could do anything and set the first season of Mandalorian anywhere when I was writing it. Dave [Filoni] would read it, we’d discuss it, and I’d make changes. It was right there. Now we have to figure out why some Mandalorians wear helmets and some don’t, what’s going on on Mandalore, and what Bo-Katan is up to. What is her reaction to this? What happened to the Darksaber? As a result, it provides fertile ground for creativity and narrative.”

The Mandalorian director then talked about how the show has evolved over time, from a standalone story about a bounty hunter to a much bigger Star Wars universe plot. Filoni’s “deep awareness of everything around the historical period,” according to Favreau, has led to the addition of certain characters:

“I believe that, no matter how simple you start, the story threads will unavoidably begin to join, weave, and overlap. And, because to Dave Filoni’s extensive knowledge of the period, possibilities will continually present themselves during narrative meetings and discussions like, ‘Well, you know what character would be here right now…’ That’s exactly how the Luke situation arose.”

The director went on to discuss Luke Skywalker’s surprise entrance in the Season 2 finale, saying that it wasn’t “necessarily planned,” but that as they searched for a mentor for Grogu, it “started to not make sense not to be Luke:”

“We didn’t set out to feature Luke Skywalker in Season 2 on purpose. But, when we looked for [Grogu] to train, we began to consider, ‘Well, what Jedi are around?’ ‘Is there anyone left?’ And it began to make no sense that it wasn’t Luke. When we begin telling stories, they take on lives of their own and develop paths. Then, as those trajectories begin to cross organically, larger stories with more people begin to make sense.”

There have beenrumorss that The Mandalorian may be renamed after Season 4 as the present plot comes to a close and the characters and time period move on to new stories. As the current tale regarding the Mandalore throne comes to a close, Giancarlo Esposito’s promise of answers in the next two seasons may well be true.

Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have stated for a long time that they had a plan for the MandoVerse, with the various spin-offs intended to culminate into a blockbuster event. Season 4 of The Mandalorian might be the highly anticipated crossover, bringing together characters and tales from the multiple shows.

Pedro Pascal, who plays Din Djarin, reportedly expressed interest in directing a MandoVerse film. Although abandoning Disney+ for the conclusion of a plot that has been presented solely on the service would be a curious choice, a theatrical event could be the perfect opportunity to bring all of these products together for a climactic showdown.

With Favreau and Filoni already contemplating Season 4 of The Mandalorian, the wait after Season 3 could be much shorter than it was before. Now that his commitments to The Last of Us have been fulfilled, Pascal’s calendar appears to bea lott more open this time around.

Between the current tale of The Mandalorian and the rise of the First Order in the sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm has a 25-year gap to work with. After Season 4, one fascinating idea could be to take a several-year time jump to get closer to The Force Awakens.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ in February 2023.
