Dwayne Johnson has commented on the recasting of Henry Cavill’s Superman in the upcoming DCU reboot. Johnson was instrumental in bringing Cavill back for his role as Superman, however, the actor’s comeback was short-lived, and he was later forced to retire due to the studio’s decision.
Johnson stated that all he and his team could do was to surround themselves with the best people and deliver the best movie possible. After including Cavill’s Superman in the mid-credits scene of Black Adam, Warner Bros. announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran were rebooting the DCU, and Cavill would be recast.
Johnson compared the situation to a new owner taking over a pro football team and saying “not my coach, not my quarterback.” However, he kept it classy and viewed the situation as a business decision, not a personal one.
Having The Guts To Fail
Johnson previously reflected on his own experience with failure and the importance of having the “guts to fail.” He believes that the desire to become famous or succeed will never be as powerful as having the courage to fail.
Unfair Handling Of Cavill’s Comeback
While Johnson kept it classy with his response, the handling of Cavill’s comeback was unfair. Cavill was led to believe he had a second run as the DC hero, only to have those plans and promises change immediately afterward, leaving him and Johnson in an odd and unfortunate position.
Moving Forward
Cavill has discussed the possibility of playing a different character in the DCU, as revealed by James Gunn, though it doesn’t seem that these prospects were enough to get the actor back on board for the universe’s new direction. Now that both stars have commented on the situation, hopefully, they can move forward and leave it behind them.
