Marvel Studios is well known for keeping its secrets well within wraps before its project’s release. Ever since numerous infamous slip-ups of Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo, they are even more careful with their cast members. Fans even see an imaginary Feige’s sniper aiming constantly at their cast members.

But despite all of them, some slip-ups do happen. One of them is made by one of the cast members for Eternals 2.

Eternals 2 – Will It, Won’t It?

On one of his appearances on Today, the veteran actor Patton Oswalt let it slip that Eternals 2 was indeed on its way. Patton Oswalt played the character of Pip, the troll in the post-credit scene of Eternals, alongside Harry Styles’ Starfox. This is exactly what he said-

They have announced there’s going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.

While the title card at the end of Eternals said, “Eternals will return,” at this stage, the future isn’t official. However, ever since Feige shared his ‘incomplete’ movie slate for Phase Six at SDCC 2022, speculations have been flying about what the blanks in the slate could be. One of the strongest candidates for them is Eternals 2.

Marvel’s Eternals (2021) was directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao. It included an ensemble cast of Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman.

The ambitious movie boasted breath-taking visuals and gorgeous cinematography. The scale of the movie was epic and it asked deep questions about humanity. However, its deliberate pace, rug-pull plot, and very different vibe to the rest of Marvel’s output meant it didn’t quite land for some Marvel fans. Grossing just $402 million, it had the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score on the website. This even further doubted for its sequel to happen.

Chloe Zhao’s Direction

The unprofitable performance of the movie Eternals led the fans to question Zhao’s direction skills. Though Zhao is a great filmmaker, her vision for Eternals did not land well with the audience. Although it can be fairly argued that Eternals’ story was too vast to be crammed into a single movie. Additionally, it featured new heroes with no strong backstories and audiences could not connect with them.

Zhao did give a new vibe to the MCU. Zhao tried to manage different things – introducing new heroes, tackling complex human emotions, and establishing the cosmic history of the entire Marvel universe.

Back in January, TheWrap recently spoke with Stephane Ceretti, the VFX Supervisor on “Eternals,” and Matt Aitken, WETA Digital VFX Supervisor. This is what they said about Zhao’s vision for the movie –

Even in our pitch that she did to Marvel, she was talking about looking at life through a grain of sand. Where you’re looking, I think, very little, but you’re a really big thing, and when you squint, you see all the intricate detail of everything that’s happening at that very small level…We go from the beach, and to the sky, then we go on the palm, then we go bigger around the hand, and then we finish on the edge of the atmosphere.

Chloe Zhao indeed is very ambitious. She has a very unique style and Marvel can be benefited from it. Maybe she should be given one more chance and she surely can come up with a treat for all of us. Characters have already been introduced now, all it would need is a good screenplay and everything could be worked out easily.

Maybe, Patton Oswalt just ‘simply assumed of happening of a sequel and misspoke’. As no official announcement has been made by the studio. It is being assumed that Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios will announce new movies at September’s D23. Maybe he will announce Eternals 2 as one of the movies in phase 6. It is also not known whether all of the star cast would return to reprise their roles. Marvel could also select a brand new Director for the sequel. Things will then will become clearer. Until then take this news with a grain of salt.
