Star Wars is undoubtedly the biggest franchise in the world, rivalled only perhaps by Marvel. This humungous franchise is all set to grow even more with the slew of planned live-action Diseny+ shows. One of the most anticipated shows in this batch of shows is Obi-Wan Kenobi. The hype for this series is off-the-charts with Ewan Mcgregor returning as Kenobi and Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
But fans are wondering if along with the two iconic stars resuming their roles, we will also get to see another much-awaited appearance- of Luke Skywalker in the show? These rumours have reached Kenobi himself and he has made some comments about it.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McGregor was asked if there’s a possibility of Luke Skywalker showing up. Obviously, McGregor didn’t give anything away and instead diplomatically answered by saying:
“That’s very possible. I don’t know.”
Luke Skywalker is definitely, without doubt, the most famous Star Wars character. As the protagonist of the movies, everyone wants to see him however they can. Also, it must be said that his popularity hasn’t declined at all throughout the decades even once. This can be attested by the jubilous fan reactions to his cameo in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. So, it’s almost a guarantee that if Luke shows up in the Kenobi show, then he will be greeted again with the same exuberation.
So can Luke realistically appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show? To know about that let us check out the time period the show is set in.
The time period that the show Obi-Wan Kenobi will be exploring will be the decade after the Revenge of the Sith where the empire triumped and rose to high power. At the end of that movie, fans will remember that Obi-Wan left newborn baby Luke on the desert planet Tatooine with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen before he exiled himself too on the very same planet.
So if Luke does show up, then he will be chronologically about 10 years old in the series. While 10-year-old Luke might not be interesting to many, but it will be interesting to see how it all connects back to the first meeting between Obi-Wan and Luke in A New Hope.
Now, it’s obviously possible that Kenobi simply failed to recognize young Luke when the two of them met in 1977 in the desert. Also it must be considered that the meeting was either short or didn’t happen at all. So for these reasons Kenobi might have failed to recognize or even know about Luke. As such, there’s a 50/50 chance of Luke showing up on the show.
Know that apart from answering the Luke question, Ewan McGregor also talked more about the show.
In the same interview, Ewan McGregor talked about fans of Kenobi and the series being in development for quite a while. McGregor said that there had been discussions regarding his return as Obi-Wan for years, but for almost two solid decades nothing materialized. But this changed when the Obi-Wan Kenobi show was put into motion.
However, he lamented the fact that he couldn’t tell fans who eagerly wanted to see him resume his role for years about his casting or the show. He said that he “wasn’t able to say anything.”
But one aspect of this entire fan movement to see him return as Obi-Wan had humiliated him. The actor said that it was sobering and humiliating to imagine that there could have been discussions about some other actor replacing him as Kenobi, a role he portrayed back in 1999. In the quote he said:
“I’d see stuff on social media like, ‘They better cast Ewan as Obi-Wan,’ and I wasn’t able to say anything. But it was pretty humiliating to think that [Disney] might be thinking about casting someone else.”
As for filming, McGregor says that it hasn’t begun but he has “done some screen tests with [director] Deborah [Chow] and other people” so as to get ready for filming. But how is she as a director? McGregor says that Deborah Chow is “a really, really good director.”
Along with this, the actor also teased that there were going to be amazing fights in the show since he was undergoing training of “monster, two-and-a-half-hour sessions of sword fights and hand-to-hand” for the Disney+ show.
Right now, Ewan McGregor is putting in hours at the gym to build up his physique for the role. Also, along with this, he is growing his iconic beard. But he is not the only one who is working hard for the show. Recently a video surfaced that showed accurate sets being made for Tatooine, where Kenobi was during this exile after Revenge of the Sith. So, Luke Skywalker or no Luke Skywalker, we are plenty excited for the show. However, it’s undoubtedly true that his presence will add that extra spice to the show. So will he show up? That remains to be seen.
