Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot has been the subject of rumors surrounding its casting for years, and the latest suggests that the Thing may be gender-swapped to a female character.

Marvel Studios Considering A Female Thing

According to popular scooper MyTimeToShineHello (MTTSH), Marvel Studios and director Matt Shakman are considering both male and female talent for the role of the Thing. MTTSH also claims that Shakman “insisted” on casting a Jewish actor for the role, likely to accurately portray the character’s comic roots. Mila Kunis, who was spotted at lunch with Shakman in February, is one of the actresses reportedly being considered for the role.

The rumor of a female Thing has sparked mixed reactions on Twitter, with some fans expressing outrage and even threatening not to watch the movie. Others have pointed out that a female Thing could bring an interesting dynamic to the character and that the comics have already introduced Sharon Ventura, a female Thing.

Why Marvel Might Gender-Swap The Thing

The decision to gender-swap the Thing is undoubtedly controversial, but there may be several reasons why Marvel Studios is considering it. One possibility is that Shakman wants to put his own stamp on the Fantastic Four, setting his movie apart from previous adaptations. Another reason may be to have an even gender split on the team or to find an actor who meets the studio’s requirement of a Jewish background.

Although the rumor of a female Thing has caused some backlash among fans, Marvel Studios may have its own reasons for considering a gender-swap. With production set to begin early next year, the studio will likely announce its Fantastic Four cast soon, with the actors possibly revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
