The trailer for Love and Thunder may have hinted at the presence of additional Gods of Thunder, despite the fact that Jane Foster’s The Mighty Thor will be introduced in the MCU. While the story of Jason Aaron’s Thor comic book series appears to be heavily incorporated into the film, it appears that Thor 4 will be taking the hero on a journey of self-discovery as he confronts Gorr, the God Butcher. In addition to Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Taika Waititi, the film will introduce two newcomers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe.
A Mjolnir-wielding Natalie Portman is seen in the Love and Thunder trailer, as she and Thor Odinson, engage in combat. In Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder series, this concept of Jane becoming Thor is introduced alongside the first appearance of Gorr the God Butcher. There is a good chance that the film will make more references to the comics than the trailer suggests, as Aaron’s work is mentioned in such a prominent manner. The number of versions that the film introduces may have already been teased in advance.
He appears in a field in the teaser trailer for Love and Thunder, which could indicate that the character will appear in various stages of maturity throughout the film. The seemingly passing shot of time could hint at how Thor will defeat the MCU’s Gorr the God Butcher, a narrative device borrowed from Aaron’s comics where the story takes place across multiple timelines. Perhaps Love and Thunder will introduce not two, but four different versions of the god of thunder.
The teaser shows a young Thor fan running through a forest in costume. Thor’s comic book appearance is replicated as a teenage version of the character appears to transform into a winged cap as the child runs behind a tree. After running behind a tree, the teen is replaced by Hemsworth’s Thor, who takes his place. If we compare this shot to Aaron’s series, we can see that there is more going on than meets the eye in this sequence which serves as a clever way of depicting how time moves on.
Thor’s quest to capture Gorr the God Butcher takes him through three generations. In the comic’s conclusion, the three incarnations of Thor join forces to defeat their common foe. Because the Love and Thunder trailer looks so much like Aaron’s work, the running shot may be an indication that Waititi is following suit.
When three generations of Thor come together with Jane Foster’s The Mighty Thor in the final battle of Thor 4, their combined strength could help defeat Gorr. With Ragnarok, Marvel Studios could use this heroic team-up to explore how the character deals with his own mortality after the teaser hinted at his demise in the form of Thor’s death. Love and Thunder has the potential to be the MCU’s largest solo superhero team to date.
