George R.R. Martin Announces House Of The Dragon Has Completed Shooting

The last time we heard, the production team of HBO’s House of the Dragon revealed that the show was being shot. Now, the latest update from George R.R. Martin suggests that the Game of Thrones prequel series has wrapped filming in London.

Martin released the first book in his series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, in 1996. While HBO’s TV adaptation of the books altered the story enormously, Game of Thrones fans are still eager for the author to complete the final two books in the series. These books are titled The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring respectively. But until that happens, it appears as if HBO has more in store for Westeros.

In recent months, HBO has officially announced a lot of Game of Thrones prequels. The network is continuously working towards developing the fantastical world to its end. These spin-offs include the working titles Tales of Dunk and Egg, 9 Voyages, Flea Bottom, and 10,000 ships. However, House of the Dragon has taken up the entire buzz this year. The show is roughly adapted from Martin’s Fire & Blood, and it is set to explore the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty.

Season 1 of the upcoming prequel series will consist of 10 episodes. Set around two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, the show will pounce around the Targaryens during a civil war known as the “Dance of Dragons.” House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Constantine, and Sonoya Mizuno.

New Update Regarding House Of The Dragon

US novelist George R. R. Martin

George R. R. Martin recently made an official announcement through a blog post. The writer stated that the filming has officially wrapped for the first season of House of the Dragon. He also elaborated to say that he has skimmed through the unedited cuts of all 10 episodes.

Martin expressed his excitement and satisfaction for the show by saying he’s “loving them”. He also added that,

“the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. My hat is off to [showrunner Ryan Condal] and [co-showrunner Miguel Sapcochnik] and their team, and to our amazing cast.”

The major shooting sequences for the series started back in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. Some of the show’s more scenic elements were also shot in Spain, California, and Portugal. Author George R.R. Martin also mentioned in his blog post that while the filming has wrapped, post-production work is yet to be completed. And these include minor technicalities ranging from special effects and color timing to its score.

Potential For The Franchise’s Future

House of the Dragon

The coming years for Westeros’ haretory on HBO Max is vastly dependent on the performance of House of the Dragon. Game of Thrones’ eighth season received tremendous backlash from audiences and critics alike. It does not come as a surprise that the fandom is not as actively invested in the franchise.

Fortunately for HBO, House of the Dragon has received a thumbs up from Martin. Which is new, because the author was not particularly thrilled by the Game of Thrones finale. Not only that, HBO executives have affirmed the success ratio for House of the Dragon as high enough to approve a second season. It is not long until the Game of Thrones prequel series premieres on HBO.
