Emily Swallow has quite a lot to say about Gina Carano’s firing. A few months into the year 2021, it was revealed that ‘The Mandalorian’ actress would not be appearing in any future Star Wars films. This was because she had published inflammatory social media postings. One of which included a post that linked Nazi Germany to the then political scene. Consequently,  the actress’ “abhorrent” social media remarks, Lucasfilm terminated her employment.

In a statement made to Variety, a Lucasfilm spokesperson said; “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

What did the posts mean?

An apparent repost of one of her posts from another account made reference to the Holocaust. Historically, during the holocaust that an estimated six million Jews were killed. The actress compared the historic event with the then political differences in the present era. Fans of the former cast member shared how angered they were with the company for misunderstanding the post. This is what one such fan said;

What did Emily Swallow say about her former co-star’s firing?

‘The Mentalist actress addressed her former co-star’s resignation at the Dragon Con in Atlanta. Emily Swallow portrayed the Armorer in three episodes of season one. When it came to her Carano, the actress had nothing but praise for her. This is what she expressed;

“All I can say is that what impressed me about her from the beginning is that she is so interested in other peoples’ opinions, and is so welcoming of other peoples’ opinions. She wants to have a genuine dialogue… On set, she’s more curious about other people. She’s very giving, she’s very gracious.”

As Emily Swallow notes, most of the circumstances surrounding Carano’s pink slip were kept under wraps. These were her thoughts;

“I know so little about what happened. I experienced it as you did. I don’t know anything about the inner workings of it. I can only speak about Gina being a lovely person, which she is.” Because of Carano’s social media presence, where she routinely published contentious posts, she was terminated from her position. “Thoroughly baffled,” Swallow adds, stressing that it’s “very dangerous” when people just listen to one side.

“I am thoroughly baffled by a lot of what we’re dealing with right now with cancel culture and I think that it’s… oh man. There are so many layers to it that are important to look at, but I think that the hatred that comes into it and when people start refusing to listen to the other side, no matter which side they’re on, I think that that’s really dangerous. One of the things that are so beautiful about our country is we have free speech. We can hear things that we don’t like, and we can disagree, and that’s fine.”

The “social media” effect

Gina Carano’s predicament is nothing short of ongoing chaos. Disney was highly applauded by many in Hollywood for taking an action. Meanwhile, others condemned the House of Mouse for purportedly dismissing an employee because of her views. As a result of Emily’s perspective, a clearer picture of the situation is revealed. It doesn’t matter how people feel about Carano’s personal opinions, her dismissal did create a “dangerous” precedent that an actress might lose their job because of what they post on social media.

Carano is the only cast member who has been terminated because of her problematic social media activity. This kind of perspective is a crucial check and balance for the entertainment sector. These consequences encourage the authorities to reserve pink slips for severe cases like this. Once fired, it is very unlikely that the firing will ever be reversed. This leaves fans concerned about Cara Dune‘s future.

While it’s possible that Carano won’t reprise her role as Cara Dune in the forthcoming Disney+ projects, there are still plenty of options to learn more about Cara’s past as a Rebel shock trooper through novels and comics. Alderaanian survivor’s trauma was an interesting aspect of the character, and it’s one that may be explored in-depth in future publishing efforts.
