A new clip from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows Chris Pratt dropping what appears to be the MCU’s first true F-bomb in franchise history. While previous near-F-bombs in the MCU have been censored, cut off, or removed from the script entirely, Pratt’s Star-Lord seems to have broken the mold with this new clip.

The Context Of The F-Bomb

In the clip, the Guardians team is trying to get into a small car, but Mantis, Drax, and Nebula appear to be locked out. As Peter Quill tries to instruct Nebula through the closed car window how to unlock the door, frustration grows between the two characters. At around 34 seconds into the clip, Pratt’s Star-Lord drops the F-bomb, saying “open the [CENSORED] door!” Despite the censoring, Pratt’s mouth is visibly saying the f-word, implying the uncensored version will appear in the actual cut of the film.

The Implications Of The F-Bomb

Theory : Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

While the use of the F-word may come as a surprise to some MCU fans, it is not uncommon for PG-13 movies to include occasional use of the word. The film’s PG-13 rating is due to “intense sequences of violence and action, strong language, suggestive/drug references and thematic elements,” with “strong language” being clear in this new footage.

Director James Gunn has used F-bombs in non-MCU projects like The Suicide Squad, and it seems he has brought the MCU its first utterance of the elusive swear with Guardians 3. The clip leaves open the possibility for more F-bombs in future MCU projects, with Deadpool coming to the MCU soon with Deadpool 3.

While some fans may be shocked by the use of the F-word in the MCU, it is clear that it will not be the last. As Marvel continues to expand its cinematic universe, it seems likely that more characters will drop the occasional F-bomb.
