Marvel’s third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will make its epic box office appearance next year. But the MCU outing is currently in the buzz. James Gunn, who had a successful run with DC’s comic book projects like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, has become Hollywood’s prized possession. The director seems to have a knack for creating blockbusters out of thin air.

Now that Gunn has returned to the MCU for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans are on the lookout for all the updates. We already know that the film will carry a darker tone as compared to the other movies in the Guardians franchise. Which serves well as the threequel will conclude the story of the eccentric team of intergalactic heroes

While GOTG Vol. 3 will mark another entry into Marvel’s winning streak, Gunn seems to be implementing everything he has learned from his time after Guardians Vol. 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn recently sat down for an interview with Variety. Gunn opened up about some major payoffs while working on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. The director intends to bring it all to the upcoming Marvel threequel.

Gunn said that while he worked with DC, he learned to “balance [his] life a little bit better.” In comparison, he never managed to do the same with his past two MCU projects:

“I had as much fun as you could have during COVID making Peacemaker, and so I’m trying to apply that more to Vol. 3. In all truth, the first two Guardians, I love the cast and crew, but they were really difficult to make. And a lot of that was self-imposed difficulty by me. I realized after Vol. 2 that I couldn’t continue to live a life if I made everything I did like Vol. 2, which I just killed myself over, unnecessarily. I needed to balance my life a little bit better. And so I’ve been applying that to Vol. 3.”

Too, Gunn reflected on the process of creating such super-powered blockbusters, and said, “The Suicide Squad also has informed Vol. 3 a lot in terms of how we’re shooting it.”  Guardians of the Galaxy franchise’s director mentioned how Vol. 3 will have “a different type of groundedness” not present in the first two movies:

“I think The Suicide Squad also has informed Vol. 3 a lot in terms of how we’re shooting it. There’s a different type of groundedness, I think, in this movie that we had in both Peacemaker and Suicide Squad. I learned so much from everything that I do.”

James Gunn has had a great run with DC. Of course, the director will put his lessons to use in the upcoming MCU adventure. To become better at what one does, it is necessary to constantly master new skills into the fold.

And since James Gunn is renowned in his profession, more people will be able to experience these improvements. Another fun fact is that the Guardians director has managed to create a perfect balance between his life and his work life.

Gunn has always given his best in all his projects. And GOTG 1 and 2 have proved it. But while work does not necessarily have to suck the life out of you, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker showcase the director’s proficiency even after working for sustainable hours.

Gunn has revealed that his next Marvel blockbuster will have a certain element of “groundedness”. GOTG 3 will probably have a unique undertone to it. And after exploring the vast and rich intergalactic world paired with a hint of humor, it will be interesting to see a grounded take on the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy series has had a trademark of dealing with an intense plot by using a humorous angle. However, the upcoming film has a sincerity to it that will demand the cast to put on a solemn face. The film will retain most of its comedic nature while also touching on some heartfelt moments.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters worldwide on May 5, 2023.
