It has barely been a month since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios, but they are already swinging big. The biggest news coming out is that Henry Cavill has departed the role of DCEU’s Superman permanently.

Henry Cavill Exits Role Of DCEU Superman 

In an Instagram post, Henry Cavill informed fans of the shocking news. He wrote:

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

This news is sudden because only a couple of months before Henry Cavill shocked fans by donning the red and blue suit in Black Adam post-credits scene. Dwayne Johnson had previously said how difficult it was to get Cavill back for the movie. But it looks like it was all for nothing.

A Full DC Reboot Incoming?

Henry Cavill’s departure comes days after a bombastic report by The Hollywood Reporter stating that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 has been shelved. The article also speculated that Cavill wasn’t in James Gunn’s new plans for the new DCU and it looks like that was true.

After the report and now Henry’s exit, rumors are swirling that James Gunn and Peter Safran are looking to start over by rebooting the DC universe. And many think that it’s indeed the right choice. After all, the old universe is mostly a critical dud with only some bright spots and commercial successes.

What makes things worse is that the old DC universe was barely connected through films. In fact, some events in one movie outright contradicts something that was told in the previous one. So wiping the slate clean and starting anew will ensure that fans will be able to follow a streamlined and curated timeline of movies. And as such, they will hopefully be able to build a stable franchise this way.
