After the massive success of its latest season, The Witcher Season 3 is currently under development. Among the little information we have so far, the new casting details for the show suggest that the upcoming season might be taking a risk by repeating a Geralt and Ciri mistake from Season 1. The Witcher is an aggressively dark fantasy drama series adapted from the well acclaimed novels and short stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The Netflix hit show sees Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher, and Freya Allan as Ciri, his Child of Surprise. Ciri is a young princess who has inherited great powers that many forces seek in order to change the world. The Witcher has earned the streaming giant Netflix an enormous audience. And yet, the show calls into question the poor scriptwriting and narrative problems of certain characters.

The Problem With The Witcher Season 1

The Witcher Season 1 was a complicated outing for the network. Part of the reason was that it depicted Sapkowski’s short stories. But the main problem of The Witcher Season 1 was that Geralt and Ciri were seen in two different timelines throughout the season. Which is why the series never focused on their relationship dynamic in a way that The Witcher video games did.

However, The Witcher Season 2 did an incredible job in solving that problem. But the storyline still kept the two main characters apart for a major part of the show. With that said, The Witcher Season 2 ended on an optimistic note. The show’s so-called family, which includes Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer of Vengerberg, finally unites. This creates a promising premise for The Witcher Season 3 as fans expect the trip to finally work on their differences and work together.

On a disappointing note, however, it appears as if the upcoming installment will not take full advantage of exploring the dynamic of this founded family. Only recently, Netflix revealed the new cast members for The Witcher Season 3. And apparently, the network has confirmed that the season will be an accurate representation of Sapkowski’s book “Time of Contempt”. Which means that Season 3 will include two new characters from the book, Milva, and Mistle.

According to the book, Geralt takes Ciri to Aretuza, the place where Yennefer herself was trained in her magic and eventually became a powerful mage. But it is there that Geralt and Ciri come upon a coup. This leads to Ciri transporting herself blindly behind Nilfgaardian lines. Which is when Geralt meets Milva and Ciri meets Mistle. This suggests that the much anticipated dysfunctional family dynamic of Netflix’s The Witcher series will, once again, not come into fruition. At least, not for long.

The Witcher Follows The Source Material

In the defense of The Witcher’s writers, it is impossible to do justice to Sapkowski’s The Witcher novels without creating instances that separate Geralt and Ciri. mainly because Ciri’s blind portal behind Nilfgaardian lines plays a very important part in shaping her narrative. And in turn, her entire future in the series.

The Witcher Season 2 paid attention to a particular scene where Ciri expresses her darker desires that made her feel like she could burn down the entire Continent. Similarly, her experiences in “Time of Contempt” will start to hone her into a powerful woman who believes that she is capable of doing just that. And more.

Consequently, it is really difficult for The Witcher Season 3 to not repeat its mistakes from Season 1. It is necessary for the show to separate Geralt and Ciri again in order for Ciri to become something that Geralt seeks and fights to protect. In essence, this is the very reason that keeps The Witcher from following its source material down to every detail. Because Sapkowski’s novels do not give Geralt and Ciri enough breathing space that is pleasant and long-lasting.

While the idea of seeing the family dynamic between Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri in The Witcher season 3 is very exciting, it seems like the show will only display the moment for a short period of time. Following which, the trio will go separate ways again.
