After The Witcher season 2, fans are wondering what’s next on the cards. It’s The Witcher prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin and it will greatly differ from audience expectations.

Starring Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan, The Witcher has been a bonafide hit for Netflix. It was released at a time when fantasy shows were all the rage.

The sheer critical acclaim and popularity of Game of Thrones proved that there was indeed a demand and love for fantasy storytelling on the small screen.

The Witcher is based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, and Netflix wasted zero time expanding it as a franchise. The first attempt at expansion was with the prequel animated series titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

It told Geralt’s mentor Vesemir’s story ahead of his live-action debut in season 2 of The Witcher. Now, this franchise expansion will continue with another prequel, Blood Origin.

This time, the live-action miniseries will reveal the origins of the first Witchers and also set up events for The Witcher season 3 to expand on.

The Witcher season 2 ended with a post-credits trailer for Blood Origin. But according to what we know about the lore revealed in season 2 of The Witcher, this prequel isn’t really about the origins of Witchers at all.

Now, origins are one aspect that will be covered, but it won’t be the main focus. The focus will be on the elves and that it is going to be the origin story of the Elder Blood.

The Witcher: Blood Origin Will Tell The Story Of The Elves

During an interview with EW, The Witcher: Blood Origin showrunner Declan De Barra explained that his focus was on the Continent before the Conjunction happened and brought monsters as well as human beings to the world. He said:

“I just was fascinated with the idea of what a pre-colonized world would look like for the elves.”

He pointed to the writings of Sapkowski to explain his inspiration. Declan De Barra said:

“He reinterprets folktales and history, and when you look at our own history, societies that had been at their height, like the Roman Empire or the Mayan Empire, that’d be right before the fall, and then we’re in dark ages again. That fascinated me to wonder what that world could have been: what society would have been like and what elves wanted. That’s what we’re going to explore here.”

The human characters of The Witcher believed that the Continent was uncivilized and savage before the Conjunction happened, and they arrived. But De Barra doesn’t see it this way. He sees it as a golden elven age that was lost.

The Witcher: Blood Origin’s trailer pretty much reinforces this. It overall focused on the world before the Conjunction of the Spheres.

3 elven characters will play major roles in the story. They are Sciane, the last member of a tribe of sword-elves, portrayed by Michelle Yeoh; Fjall, one of the rival clan members played by Laurence O’Fuarain; and Éile, a powerful warrior essayed by Sophia Brown.

The trailer only hints at the Conjunction of the Spheres by showing mysterious powerful green flares in the heavens that are associated with them.

Along with this, we see the three leads in a battle against the first human invaders. Since the Conjunction of the Spheres introduced both monsters and humans to the Continent, so The Witcher: Blood Origin looks all set to explore the social and cultural impact of their arrival.

The First Witchers Came Way Way After The Conjunction Of The Spheres

According to season 2 of The Witcher, in the beginning, mages tried to control as well as weaponize the monsters. When this went wrong, the first Witchers were created.

As per a dialogue from Vesemir, the Witchers, as we know them, were only created 300 years before the events of the current show. So that’s about 900 years after the Conjunction of the Spheres.

This will definitely be shown in The Witcher: Blood Origin. Many might think that the prequel show might get the timeline all wrong, but that isn’t the case. The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Hissrich worked as executive producer on the prequel.

She has openly discussed the fact that scripts were rewritten to ensure that everything fits together and is all one coherent timeline. Now, marketing for Blood Origins has hinted at the existence of proto-Witchers.

But the timeline of the show hints that this might not be the case. In fact, viewers shouldn’t expect anything more than mere hints at Order of the Wolf.

Also, it needs to be noted that even in Sapkowski’s own notes, there were consistent suggestions that the initial attempts to create Witchers went badly.

So, this means that the proto-witchers who might show up in The Witcher prequel might be fundamentally flawed. Anyways, overall, they will just be one aspect of the story they are telling. As such, they are more of a secondary plot rather than the main one.

What’s The Actual “Blood Origin” Story The Witcher Prequel Will Tell?

So overall, rather than focusing on the Witchers themselves, The Witcher: Blood Origin will more than likely focus on the origin story of the Elder Blood. As such, it will be a literal “Blood Origin.” Now, that sounds pretty neat.

Also, note that in The Witcher lore, ancient elven sages made a mutated gene in the hopes of creating a Child of Elder Blood who could open the gateway between the spheres.

As Ciri saw during a vision in season 2, the last elf who had the Elder Blood was Lara Dorren. She caused quite a stir by mating with a human. Due to this, Elder Blood was introduced into humans.

Ciri is the Child of Elder Blood that was foretold from the elven legend. Season 2 of The Witcher also subtly hints that the elven mages were responsible for the Conjunction of the Spheres.

When going to the hut with Mother in Darkness, Yennefer walked through cave paintings that recounted the history of the Conjunction. Immediately before this, there’s a painting of an elven sorceress with her hands placed on the Monoliths that resulted in the Conjunction.

So, it can be assumed that the elven sorcerers who had Elder Blood in them caused the first Conjunction, and that Blood Origin might reveal the full story of Lara Dorren.

This would make it perfectly timed and also explain why Lauren Hissrich mentioned scripts from season 3 of The Witcher having to be rewritten to accommodate revelations in the prequel series.

Also, a focus on Elder Blood would even fit in with the introduction of proto-witchers. The Witcher season 2 revealed that Elder Blood is a major component of the mutagens that make Witchers during the Trial of the Grasses, and that Ciri has it.

So, any hints of the first Witchers meant that they would need Elder Blood as well. As such, it all ties together. So, exploring the elves, Conjunction of the Spheres, Elder Blood, and more will ultimately give us the first Witchers as we know them in The Witcher: Blood Origin.
