To everyone’s surprise, Marvel Studios recently dropped the official trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This official trailer was around 2 minutes and 11 seconds long (almost as long as the teaser released before) and packs many gut-wrenching visuals and a killer background score. It also has many new reveals for the movie and the debuting characters – Namor, the sub-Mariner, and the Ironheart. Let’s see them one by one.

Check out the official trailer here.

T’Challa’s funeral

T’Challa’s funeral

What has so far been evident from both the teaser and trailer released from Marvel is that the movie shall have a grand funeral for T’Challa. After the sad demise of the incredible actor – Chadwick Boseman, who had played the titular character in the previous installment, Kevin Feige announced that they shall not be recasting the character. So, how the movie shall address the passing of T’Challa in it, remains to be seen. But one thing is clear – the funeral shall surely highlight the grand Wakandan culture and tradition.

Mayan Culture Influence

The character of Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta), who is making his MCU debut in the movie, and his people shall draw a heavy influence from the Mayan civilization. In the trailer, Namor is shown to be inscribing Mayan art on the wall by himself. Marvel has previously stated that Namor and his people’s culture shall be heavily inspired by the Mesoamerican culture.

Namor’s throne

A better shot is shown of Namor’s throne. Unlike the comics (where Namor is the king of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis), the movie (reportedly) shall show him to be the king of an underwater kingdom called – Talocan (check out our article on this change here). Talocan was an underwater kingdom in Mayan mythology. The Namor’s throne consists of a skeleton of a shark’s mouth, and it looks incredible.

Namor’s Flying Boots

Namor’s flying boots

One of the key features of Namor’s suit in the comics is his flying boots. However ridiculous it may sound, the folks at Marvel seem to have decided to adapt it into live-action too. In the trailer released, Namor can be seen flying with help of its ‘winged’ boots in at least two instances. In one he seemed to be descending slowly, in other he seems to be leaping up towards a flying ship.

K’uk’ulkan

M’Baku saying K’uk’ulkan

In one of the shots of the trailer, M’Baku (Winston Duke) says, “His people do not call him general or king. They call him K’uk’ulkan – the feather serpent god.” He most evidently is referring to the Namor. K’uk’ulkan,  is the name of a Mesoamerican serpent deity that was worshipped by the Yucatec Maya people of the Yucatán Peninsula. M’Baku further says that if they kill Namor, they might risk igniting an “eternal war”.

Wakandan Flood

Another thing that has been hinted at in both the teaser and trailer for the movie is that Wakanda shall somehow be flooded. People can be seen struggling for their lives among the roaring waves of water. The water waves even crash through the Wakandan throne room. The reason behind this flood is clearly Namor, who is seemingly angry with Wakandans and is invading Wakanda.

Talocanians

Talocanians

The Talocanians (people of Talocan) are underwater people. Their bodies have adapted to easily breathe underwater, but not on the surface. This seems to be the reason why the Talocanians appear to be wearing blue masks over their mouths. Namor is clearly an exception among them. This is clearly because of his parentage (human father and Talocanian mother) and him being a Mutant.

Ironheart’s suit

Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) is also set to make her live-action debut through Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the official trailer released, she seems to be making her iron suit. We finally see a clear peak at her Ironheart suit taking off into the sky. Her suit seems to be heavily inspired by Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor. Riri might have seemed Shuri’s help in building the armor, and now is using it to protect Wakanda.

New Black Panther

New Black Panther

At the end of the trailer, we finally get to see the new Black Panther suit.  The phsique of Black Panther clearly hints that a female is donning the mantle this time. Although no face is revealed, the most likely contender is Shuri (Letitia Wright), T’Chala’s sister. Whatever be the string of events that led to her accepting the mantle, one thing is sure – the new Black Panther suit looks dope!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases worldwide in theatres on November 11, 2022.
