Here’s How Kevin Feige Lied Straight To Daredevil Star’s Face

What makes Charlie Cox say that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige lied to him? Marvel Studios and Sony’s NWH wowed both fans and critics alike. They did so with a slew of cameos from Marvel’s past gracing the silver screen. After Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige assured fans that nothing of the sort would happen, previous cinematic Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, as well as a slew of old Spider-Villains, appeared.

No cast member was more important to Daredevil superfans than Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, who went on to star as the Man Without Fear for three seasons of his own solo series on Netflix. For the Defenders miniseries, he also put the character in a team-up setting.

When Netflix canceled Daredevil, fans were left in the dark about Matt Murdock’s future adventures. Cox was rumored to be pop-up in an MCU film, with fans agreeing that NWH was the most likely location for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to make a comeback.

Of course, in the months leading up to the release of NWH, Charlie Cox was forbidden from validating his role in the film. Interviewers pounced on every opportunity to extract the coveted information from the actor. However, he refused to budge, asserting that his Matt Murdock would not appear. Cox is finally making headlines and discussing his role in the Spider-Man threequel.

A Big Sigh For Cox

Daredevil actor Charlie Cox told HeyUGuys that it was a “relief” to finally be able to discuss his part as Matt Murdock on NWH:

“It’s a relief to be able to talk about it. Y’know, getting that phone call was a life-changing moment, really…. My involvement with that character and the MCU was dead and buried, I hadn’t heard anything for a couple of years and so I’d moved on. It was incredibly unexpected and out of the blue.”

Cox went on to describe a face-to-face meeting he had in late 2019 with Kevin Feige. Despite NWH being in development at the time, Kevin Feige lied to Cox by omission; by not sharing Marvel Studios’ Daredevil plans. In retrospect, Cox described Feige as “a very good liar” with a powerful deadpan expression that duped the Daredevil actor:

“I did a play in 2019 with Tom Hiddleston and Kevin Feige came to see our play. And, Y’know, I went and shook hands with him and said hi and he said how much he enjoyed the play. Never mentioned Daredevil or anything like that. So it turns out he’s a very good liar as well (laughs).”

The actor also spoke about the filming process and the strenuous secrecy that surrounded it:

“I got the call midway through lockdown, Summer of 2020… and we filmed Spider-Man in March of 2021, so I had to keep it secret for almost a year…. So yeah, it’s been intense.”

Charlie Cox deserves major props for having to endure multiple rounds of questions about whether or not he was, in fact, returning as Daredevil in the MCU, only to have to lie. But the deception paid off in the end. This is so since many fans consider Matt Murdock’s scene in NWH to be one of their favorites. When considering all of the other wackiness that occurs in the NWH, this is no small feat.

With Feige as the MCU’s main man, it should come as no surprise that he is a “very good liar”. It’s part of his job description for him to keep secrets. It may certainly be frustrating to have to conceal the truth all the time. Nonetheless, the payoff comes when moviegoers scream and cheer during key MCU moments.

Daredevil, on the other hand, is currently widely speculated to have a role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk. Given that She-Hulk is an attorney, similar to Murdock, it would not be surprising if the two characters crossed paths.
