Taking on the role of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones is, according to Kit Harington, like working in the MCU. When he’s not playing the bumbling son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, who joins the Night Watch and is later crowned King of the North in the series, Kit Harington can be found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman.
Despite its controversial conclusion, George R.R. Martin’s adaptation of the popular fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin, which aired its final episode in 2019, ranks among the best television series of all time.
Harington’s portrayal of Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, for which he was nominated for two Primetime Emmys, contributed to the show’s success. Since the show ended, Harington has been searching for his next career-defining role, and it appears that he has found it in Chloé Zhao’s entry into the MCU, which will be released on November 5 this year.
Harrington’s Dane Whitman works at London’s Natural History Museum and has a romantic relationship with Sersi, an Eternal. At the same time, Eternals is primarily about the titular superhero team. Richard Madden, who previously starred with Kit Harington on Game of Thrones, plays an Eternal named Ikaris, who Sersi lusts after.
Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington recently discussed with Variety how the show helped him prepare for the MCU’s massive film franchise, which has a higher production value than the MCU. Since he got to flex his comedic muscles on Eternals, the two are “different beasts,”- Kit Harington says. Take a look at what he had to say after the break:
“Nothing really, majorly surprises me after going through those eight seasons of Thrones. It was as big as anything gets by the end, as far as scale goes. But moving into Marvel, it is a different beast, in more subtle ways than you’d imagine. What I like about the differences for me about these two things is I get to have the lightness of touch in this, which I think is really important. It’s what I really loved about the Marvel movies — those little moments of kind of lightness, comedy, in amongst everything. And I saw a few opportunities for that with this character. Having played a majorly central part of a different show who was not comedic or light in any way whatsoever, not being the center of attention in this show and playing something that’s a little lighter was kind of fun.”
Even when he was cast as the bastard boy Jon Snow in the HBO series, Kit Harington had no idea how big of success he would become as an actor. It was a lot of things, but it wasn’t often funny or light. With Kit Harington’s character having a tough time with the freezing temperatures at the Wall and later going through hell to retake his home Winterfell defend it against a horde of White Walkers.
Game of Thrones was an excellent crash course for Harington to get a feel for the scope of the MCU. HBO’s Game of Thrones featured a wide range of characters from all over the world. However, Jon Snow became increasingly important as the series progressed.
As part of the ensemble cast of Eternals, Kit Harington had to blend in with the likes of Angelia Jolie and Salma Hayek. Eternals, the film he makes his MCU debut, will be released in theaters on November 5.
