Oscar Isaac stipulated one condition to reprise his role as Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara was first seen traveling the multiverse with the Spider-Men from the animated 1960s television series. This is where the famous Spider-Man pointing meme was recreated. The joke was certainly enjoyable in the context of the film. For this reason, it became evident that the newer version of Spider-Man would play an important role in an upcoming Spider-Verse sequel.
Miguel O’Hara, a superhero from the year 2099, was created by Peter David and Ricky Leonardi in 1992. He battles Alchemax, a fictional mega-corporation, with the help of his spider-like abilities. When he first appeared in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Spider-Man 2099 quickly became one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe. The creators of Into the Spider-Verse chose Oscar Isaac to play the character for the first time in a film. Isaac has previously played the villain Apocalpyse in X-Men: Apocalypse and will play the role of Moon Knight in the upcoming MCU series for Disney+.
Before agreeing to return for Spider-Man, Isaac had one condition for the creative team: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Isaac’s biggest fear was that his character would be boring. Below, you can see Lord and Miller’s response.
“Oscar Isaac has one condition of taking the gig: ‘Don’t make me boring.’ He’s made a really complex character out of Miguel O’Hara, and he’s definitely not boring.”
Taking upon the role of Apocalypse placed the actor in a wrong spot. This is because most critics and audiences criticized him for being a nightmare and a generic supervillain. Isaac’s one stipulation may be a reaction to his portrayal of the character in X-Men: Apocalypse. The filmmakers and Isaac have a lot of room to explore and contrast Miguel O’Hara’s origin story and overall mythology with the other Spider-Man characters. Spidey will be joined by Spider-Woman and the Japanese Spider-Man and returning characters Peter B. Parker and Miles Morales.
It’s unclear what intricacies Isaac will bring to Spider-Man 2099. Nonetheless, the humongous framework of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with Part 1 slated for its 2022 release and Part 2 for 2023 suggests there will be plenty of time for him to develop. Sony is working on several Spider-Man projects, both live-action and animated. And so it’s safe to assume the company is considering having Spider-Man 2099 star in his animated feature film. Because of the freedom of voice recording, this could be one of many high-profile leading roles for Isaac. This is despite his already-full schedule in film and television.
