HBO’s “The Last of US” is breaking viewership records like never before. The first episode of the zombie apocalypse show adapted from the game of the same name initially scored 4.7 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max as per Nielsen. Soon that number ballooned up to 18 million after a week of the first episode being available.

Now, that same magic is repeating again with episode 2. As such, soon the show might experience something that happened with last year’s “House of the Dragon,” and that is a season 2 renewal news. So let us take a look at the numbers.

The Last of Us Episode 2 Viewership Numbers

the last of us

As per Nielsen (reported through Variety), episode 2 of “The Last of Us” brought in a total of 5.7 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max within 24 hours of it being available on the platforms. This is a jump of 22% from last week’s episode that got 4.7 million viewers. HBO is reporting that this jump is the largest audience growth in the history of the prestige network for the second week of any HBO Original drama series.

HBO has also reported that the viewership numbers for episode 2 will jump up even higher this week. As per the streaming service:

“Sunday night viewership for an HBO series typically represents 20%-40% of the show’s total gross audience per episode.”

So the new episode will hit a milestone soon. This popularity is amazing but not surprising. After all, the show is the adaptation of a megahit game that has sold more than 10 million copies globally. The tremendous success of the show reminds us of the success of another franchise show, “House of the Dragon.”

House Of The Dragon Renewal

The prequel to “Game of Thrones” drew in about 25 million viewers in just its premiere week and became the most-watched premiere episode in HBO’s history. So within days, the show was renewed for a second season. The second episode climbed even higher and the viewership held steady through out the time the season aired.

Although “The Last of Us” hasn’t reached anywhere never “The House of the Dragon” viewership levels, but it has showed huge steady growth that is still increasing. As such, an early renewal might be in the cards soon if the show continues to climb higher.
