House of the Dragon episode 7 starts with the funeral of Lady Laena Velaryon in Driftmark at the Castle of High Tide. Throughout the course of the funeral, we can hear Vhagar growling and roaring as her voice thundered through the sky. She had just lost her dragonrider Lady Laena Velaryon who she had to burn to death with her own dragonfire. Vhagar was chained on a cliff of Driftmark and tied up. She was meant to be claimed by Laena’s daughters Rhaena and Baela. However, Aemond Targaryen gets to her first and h0nestly seems like a much better fit for Vhagar than Rhaena and Baela. So let us explore why the duo of Aemond and Vhagar is so perfect.

On the night of Lady Laena’s funeral, Aemond wanders around the Castle of High Tide with only one idea in mind. He has been hearing Vhagar roar and growl all day long and wants to claim her before anyone else can. As he walks up to her and tries to untie her, she gets agitated. She almost breathes dragonfire before Aemond manages to get her in his control. In fact, they seemingly bond very quickly, as Vhagar gives into his commands. She respects his orders and even lets him ride her. And that is how Aemond claims Vhagar. In the meanwhile, Rhaena tells Baela that someone stole Vhagar. This leads to a major fight between the children of Daemon and Rhaenyra versus the sons of Alicent. As  Aemond threatens to kill Jacaerys, Lucerys slashes Aemond’s eye in defense of his brother.

The legacy of Vhagar

She is the oldest, largest and fiercest dragon in all of Targaryen history. There were lores that sung praises about her strength and fiery breath. Vhagar has had a history of brilliant and courageous warriors riding her. Her first rider was the Queen Visenya Targaryen who is known to be an incredibly hardened and valiant warrior. She rode Vhagar on multiple missions and won wars on her back. Then she was claimed by Baelon the Brave.

After Baelon passed away, Lady Laena Velaryon bonded with Vhagar at the mere age of twelve. She was known to have loved flying and spent most of her time in the sky. Even after marrying Daemon, herself and him rode their dragons Vhagar and Caraxes respectively and put on a splendid show. The one thing that remains common between all her riders is their courage and fearlessness.

Why are they perfect for each other?

Why are Aemond and Vhagar perfect for each other

Aemond and Vhagar are perfect for each other. Aemond was the greatest warrior of the greens. He was viscous, vile, merciless and absolutely menacing. So its natural that when he went to claim a dragon, he chose the oldest, largest and most dangerous one. This also brings a huge dragon to the side of the greens which only strengthens them further. In fact she almost single handedly tilted the Civil War in favor of the greens. Vhagar deemed Aemond to be worthy of riding her and bonded with him because of his courage and valor. It is not easy to tame and ride a dragon in the first meeting, and especially not one who is 200 years old.

She even tested him before accepting him. Aemond stood his ground even when Vhagar was about to breathe dragonfire. She flew haphazardly and erratically to test whether Aemond could hold on. Eventually she realized that despite all the obstacles she put his way, he resisted them and persevered. And that’s why Vhagar chose Aemond. Thus, they developed a bond of mutual respect. Both of them are very brave and become hardened by the multiple wars and challenges thrown their way.
