House of the Dragon Episode 3 picks up three years after the wedding of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower. The time jump is referenced a few times during the episode with regard to the Stepstones as well as Rhaenyra’s age. The King now has a son. He is celebrating Aegon II Targaryen’s second birthday by going on a hunt with several other houses of the realm. However, the last three years have definitely been eventful. So let us take a look at all that happened during the 3-year time jump.
The previous episode of House of the Dragon witnessed the King’s attempt to remarry. While marrying Lady Laena Velaryon would have been to more strategic choice. The King followed his heart and chose to marry Lady Alicent Hightower. This marriage happened off-screen during the time jump.
Soon after getting married, Lady Alicent became pregnant with Viserys’ son, Aegon II Targaryen. Her pregnancy and childbirth happened off-screen in House of the Dragon. In fact, at present Aegon is 2 years old and the King is celebrating his birthday with a hunt in the Kingswood. Meanwhile, Alicent is pregnant once more.
In the previous episode of House of the Dragon, Prince Daemon and Lord Corlys had entered into an alliance with one another. Lord Corlys needed Daemon’s support to wage war in the Stepstones and save Driftmark from Craghas Drahar the Crabfeeder. Lord Corlys was also supported by his Velaryon armies and his eldest son Laenor Velaryon. As it turns out they had been fighting alone for three years without any help from the Crown and the King as they had directly disobeyed his orders and started the battle in the Stepstones. Their resources were dwindling, their men were losing motivation and the dragons became useless once Craghas Drahar and his armies came up with the idea of hiding within caves to avoid the dragonfire.
Princess Rhaenyra turned seventeen and became of age during the three year time jump. Ever since, King Viserys has been receiving marriage proposals from all over the realm as Lords ask for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s hand in marriage. However, Rhaenyra seems adamant to not marry for as long as possible out of spite.
Princess Rhaenyra has become increasingly lonely as she has lost contact with her Uncle Daemon, lost a dear friend in Alicent Hightower and been often neglected by her father after the birth of his first born son. Her pent up anger is pretty obvious as she feels neglected and replaced. In fact, the King wants her to be married hoping that she would find some happiness in it as she had become more and more isolated in the past three years.
