James Gunn has announced the new slate of his DCU and it is titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.” The first chapter consists of 10 projects, 5 of which are movies and the other 5 are TV shows. One of the TV shows currently in development is a Wonder Woman prequel show titled “Paradise Lost” and the information given about it will make any DC fan interested.

Peter Safran, the co-CEO of DC Studios, said in the press release for the new DCU slate that the show will be like “Game of Thrones” and be set in Themiscyra before Diana Prince’s birth. Here’s the full statement:

“It’s gonna be a ‘Game of Thrones’-ish story about Themiscyra, Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons – and it’s also the birthplace of Wonder Woman. This drama is really about the political intrigue behind a society of all women.”

James Gunn added that the show will explore the ugly truths of an all-women society:

“What’s the origin of an island of all women? What are the beautiful truths and the ugly truths behind all of that, and what’s the scheming like between the different power players in that society?”

The premise is certainly interesting. After all, it will be intriguing to see a show explore how a society of all-women operate. The first “Wonder Woman” movie directed by Patty Jenkins depicted Themyscira as being populated by warrior woman. But nothing was shown about how the society operates.

This will give us a peek at what goes behind the curtains. Also, we will know who is calling the shots in that society. However, the idea of exploring the birth place of one of DC’s main heroes before their time in a Game of Thrones style format isn’t new.

DC already tried it with the TV series “Krypton” and failed since it was canceled after 2 seasons. Here’s to hoping that the Themyscira show will have a better outcome.

What About Wonder Woman?

The show will be set before Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman’s birth so the major DC heroine will not be a part of the show. But with Superman and Batman already getting live-action films why is Wonder Woman getting left behind?

With rumors swirling about Gal Gadot’s departure, DC Studios might be planning on developing Themyscira first before introducing a new Wonder Woman so that the general public accepts her. Also, for long Wonder Woman’s corner of DC has languished so this a great opportunity to develop the character’s background and delve deep into her history.

How successfully the DCU gets that done remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for more news.
