In 2010, DreamWorks Animation released the first film, How to Train Your Dragon. The studio released a sequel in 2014, and the trilogy concluded in 2019. Hiccup is a young Viking with no obvious fighting talents who lives in a land where his tribe is at war with dragons, until he meets one of his own. The two then become inseparable friends. Deblois’ wild franchise has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a single, little-known animated film. Since 2010, the films have garnered multiple Oscar nominations, spawned several sequels, and even delved into the world of television with a variety of animated streaming shows.

With this in mind, it’s only logical for Universal to monetize the brand and bring it to live-action.

While these transitions from animation to live-action might often break empty (e.g., Disney’s Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King). Having Deblois on the team is a tremendous signal of trust in the film’s success.

Dean Deblois’ baby is How to Train Your Dragon, so seeing him receive the opportunity to introduce the world of Hiccup and Toothless to a larger audience should be appreciated.
