Ryan has long voiced a desire to reunite with his X-Men Origins co-star, Hugh Jackman, despite Jackman’s declaration that he would be retiring from the Wolverine role after Logan.

Some of Hugh’s admirers thought he changed his mind after some cryptic social media remarks last year, although it was unclear whether they were related to his part in Deadpool 3. Furthermore, Ryan Reynolds has said that it wasn’t easy to include the mutant in the third installment.

Adjustments Had To Be Made

Ryan Reynolds, a fresh face in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently spoke with Collider about the challenges of introducing mutants to Marvel Studios for the first X-Men film.

Although he made it apparent that selling the team on Hugh Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine was simple, Reynolds did concede that there were “a lot of moving parts” and “a lot of red tape” to go through in order to make the project a reality.

“It’s not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell. It’s an immediate and emphatic, unqualified yes. It’s a lot of moving parts and Fox and X-Men and all that kind of stuff that Marvel needs to sort through. A lot of red tape in order to make that happen. And they did it. And I’m really grateful that they did it, because for me, working with Hugh is a dream come true. But working with Logan and having Logan and Wade together in a movie is beyond any dream I would ever be audacious enough to have. So I’m really, really super fucking excited to do this film.”

Even though he received “too much credit” for getting Jackman back in the film, Reynolds was also asked to think about the talks he had with the actor to get him to be cast.

“I think you’re giving me too much credit. I don’t believe that I’m responsible for Hugh coming back. I always wanted Hugh to come back.”

About four years ago, he had his first discussion with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about a movie starring Deadpool and Wolverine. Around that time, Jackman had phoned Reynolds to express his interest in returning. And although he did offer to let Jackman discuss the facts of that chat, it was Reynolds who ended up shouldering the burden of convincing Feige that this movie might be a good concept.

“My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago, maybe three years ago, or three and a half, four years ago, I’m not sure, was about doing a movie with the two of us, a Deadpool Wolverine movie. And that was not possible at the time. And then Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and express that he’d be interested in coming back and doing this one more time. And the contents of that conversation, I’ll let Hugh, because I know it’s only inevitable that you and Hugh are going to speak at some point soon, I’m sure. I’ll let Hugh answer that on his own. But he expressed interest in coming back, and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it.”

For a long time, Ryan Reynolds has been attempting to convince Hugh Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine in a Deadpool team-up. Jackman had previously said that he was through playing Wolverine, but he has since returned. What this means for the character’s future after Deadpool 3 is unclear. However, the musical actor is not expected to be a permanent fixture, so this may turn out to be a one-time thing unless he makes a cameo in upcoming Marvel Studios projects.
