Lucasfilm’s top executive, Kathleen Kennedy, has confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will have the longest runtime of any Indiana Jones movie to date. The sequel will be approximately 2 hours and 22 minutes in length, making it the longest movie in the franchise, surpassing the 2-hour-8-minute runtime of 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Kennedy stated that the production team discussed the runtime of the movie, and they concluded that it was long-form storytelling that they prefer in the streaming space. She added that she did not want to make it any longer despite the trend of three-hour-plus movies.

Indiana Jones 5 is the final movie in the Indiana Jones franchise, ending Harrison Ford’s incredible 42-year run with his rotating rounds of co-stars. The movie will debut in theaters on June 30, and it will also break records with its budget, with a $294.7 million pricetag being the highest in Lucasfilm history.

The Impact Of Longer Runtimes On Movie Success

The length of movies has become a hot topic over the past couple of years, with discussions around Marvel and DC movies. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the two most recent releases from both companies, totaled at 2 hours, 5 minutes and 2 hours, 10 minutes, respectively. Other new releases have also come close to these runtimes.

However, it is not surprising to see Indiana Jones 5 boasting a long runtime, considering it is the last Indiana Jones movie that will be made. Ant-Man 3 and Phase 4 of the MCU also broke records with their longer runtimes, indicating a trend towards longer movies.

The extended runtime of Indiana Jones 5 is expected to provide Harrison Ford with every opportunity to shine, as the movie seeks to send him out with a bang after four decades wielding the whip and leather jacket.
